New South Wales in May 2016: Wettest May since 2000

May was the wettest for New South Wales since 2000, with well above average rainfall in most of the State but a very dry month along the coast. Both maximum and minimum temperatures were well above average, with parts of eastern NSW experiencing their warmest May on record.

  • Wettest May for the State since 2000
  • Heavy rain events in inland New South Wales
  • Very dry conditions on the east coast
  • Sixth-warmest statewide mean temperatures on record for May
  • Warmest May night on record for anywhere in NSW

Rainfall was 16.5% above average for New South Wales during May, the wettest May since 2000. Two cold fronts, on 1 and 8-10 May, produced widespread falls west of the Great Dividing Range, with some stations recording their wettest May day on record on the 9th or 10th. Many inland areas consequently recorded their wettest May since at least 1996. In contrast, neither of these rain events impacted the coast, with most of the coastal strip recording well below average rainfall and several stations recording their driest May since at least 1982.

Both daytime and night-time temperatures were above average for the State as a whole, with the statewide mean temperature 1.51 °C above average and the sixth-warmest on record for May. Temperatures were particularly warm in the east of the State, with many stations recording their warmest May on record for average daily maximum, minimum or mean temperatures.

Temperatures were above-average for most of the month, with some stations breaking records for daily maximum or minimum temperatures during the first half of the month and many coastal stations including Sydney breaking records for the number of May days above 25 °C. Notably, South West Rocks recorded a minimum temperature of 22.2 °C on the 10th, the warmest May night ever recorded in New South Wales. However, the month ended with a cooler period, with some stations recording their coldest May night on record on the 30th.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Wednesday 1 June 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
