Sydney in November 2016: A sunny end to spring
November was warm, dry and sunny in Sydney, with fewer rain days and more sunshine than normal. Average maximum temperatures were the equal fourth-warmest on record at Observatory Hill, with persistently warm days throughout the month.
A dry end to spring
- Rainfall was below average across Sydney during November, but generally not as dry as November 2014.
- Sydney Observatory Hill recorded rain on only 5 days (average 12 days)
- Thunder was reported at Sydney Airport on 5 days, with reports of hail from a storm near Sackville on the 28th
- There were an average of 9.5 hours of sunshine at Sydney Airport, the sunniest November since 1990
Warm temperatures across the city
- Maximum temperatures were well above average across the city, and the equal fourth-warmest on record at Observatory Hill
- There were 18 days of 25 °C or higher at Observatory Hill, the third-highest number on record and the most since 1894
- Five days reached 30 °C at Observatory Hill (average is 3 days), with 13 days reaching 30 °C at Richmond, the most since 2009 (average is 8 days)
- The coldest day had a maximum temperature of 22.7 °C at Observatory Hill on the 9th; all previous Novembers have had at least one day below 21 °C
- Nights were also warm across the city, with Observatory Hill recording its equal eighth-warmest November for mean minimum temperatures
- Four nights remained above 20 °C at Observatory Hill (average 1 night), with the coolest night dropping to 12.1 °C on the 1st.

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Sydney using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Thursday 1 December 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on
observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from
site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of
record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the
climate record for the site, based on the decile
ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in
decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile
8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time
as a percentage
of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
