Greater Sydney in January 2018: Heatwaves and dry conditions
Greater Sydney experienced a hotter than average January, with a number of sites in western Sydney recording their hottest January day on record. Rainfall was below average across the region.
A hot start to the year
- Heatwave conditions were experienced from the 6th to 8th across Greater Sydney, with many sites recording their warmest January day on record; Penrith Lakes recorded Greater Sydney's hottest temperature for the month of 47.3 °C on the 7th, and the second-hottest day ever recorded in Greater Sydney (Richmond holds the record of 47.8 °C in January 1939)
- Milder conditions were experienced across the region on the 10th and again from the 14th to 18th, as cool changes moved through the area; Mount Boyce had Greater Sydney's coolest night of the month on the 15th when it dropped to 7.2 °C, while Mangrove Mountain experienced its coldest January night on record, dropping to 9.5 °C on the 18th
- Hot days returned from the 18th, particularly in the western parts of Greater Sydney; eastern parts were spared from the worst of the heat during this period with the sea breeze moderating temperatures along the coast
- Penrith Lakes AWS recorded four consecutive days over 40 °C from the 19th to the 22nd, the first time ever at this site and only the second time this has occurred anywhere in the Greater Sydney region (Richmond had four consecutive days over 40 °C in February 2009)
- As a result of these heat events several sites, mostly in the west of the region, had their highest January mean daily maximum temperature on record
- Very warm overnight temperatures and persistent high humidity were experienced during the last week of January; Bansktown Airport recorded its highest ever January minimum temperature of 24.8 °C on the 28th
- A cool change at the end of the month brought relief across Greater Sydney, with the 31st being the coolest day for January 2018 for most sites
- Overall, maximum temperatures were above average for the region, with some sites in the west being up to 4 °C warmer than normal; minimum temperatures were also mostly above average, however typically within 1 °C of normal
Drier than average to kick off 2018
- Overall, Greater Sydney was drier than average, with Bankstown and Lucas Heights recording their lowest January rainfall in over 20 years
- Most of the rain across the region fell during the 8th as a trough of low pressure brought widespread showers and thunderstorms; the highest total was 43.0 mm at Mount Wilson recorded over the 24 hours to 9am on the 9th
- Light to moderate falls were also reported across Greater Sydney from the 1st to 5th and on the 31st; the Blue Mountains area also had light falls from the 23rd to 29th
Sydney (Observatory Hill)
- The mean daily maximum temperature for Sydney (Observatory Hill) was 27.8 °C, which is 1.8 °C above the long-term average of 26.0 °C
- The warmest day was 43.4 °C on the 7th, which is the fourth-hottest January day on record at Observatory Hill, and the coolest day was on the 31st when the temperature reached 22.0 °C
- The mean daily minimum temperature for Sydney (Observatory Hill) was 20.1 °C, which is 1.4 °C above the long-term average of 18.7 °C
- The coldest morning was 14.8 °C on the 14th, and the warmest morning was on the 28th when the minimum temperature was 24.0 °C
- Total rainfall for Sydney (Observatory Hill) was 37.8 mm, which is only 37% of the long-term average of 101.7 mm; the rain fell on 13 days, which is slightly above the average of 12 days for January

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Greater Sydney using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
In September 2017 this summary was broadened to include data from observing sites in or near the Greater Sydney “Greater Capital City Statistical Area” (GCCSA). The Australian Bureau of Statistics designed the GCCSAs to “include the population within the urban area of the city, as well as people who regularly socialise, shop or work within the city, and live in small towns and rural areas surrounding the city. It is important to note that GCCSAs do not define the built up edge of the city. They provide a stable definition for these cities and are designed for the output of a range of social and economic survey data.”
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Thursday 1 February 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
