Sydney in March 2013: Warm, dry, and sunny March for Sydney

Rainfall
Sydney Observatory Hill recorded 65.6 mm of rain during March, half the historical average of 130.6 mm, with March totals well below average across the city. The rain fell over eleven days but only five exceeded 2 mm (average 8 days). Almost all the rain recorded fell during a period of moist onshore winds at the start of the month, with heaviest falls associated with a surface trough on the 1st, reaching 31.8 mm at Observatory Hill and 52 mm at Avalon and Frenchs Forest.
Temperature
The average maximum temperature at Sydney Observatory Hill was 26.4 °C, 1.7 °C above the historical average. This was the 7th warmest March on record and the warmest since 27.1 °C was recorded in 2006, as well as the warmest March at Sydney Airport since 1983. The warm days were associated with generally dry, sunny conditions and a lack of southerly winds during the month.
Temperatures reached at least 25 °C on 22 days, well above the historical average of 14 days and the equal 4th highest on record, with three days reaching at least 30 °C (average 1-2 days). Temperatures reached 33.5 °C on the 28th, the latest day this warm since 33.9 °C on 5 April 1986, with temperatures reaching 34.9 °C at the airport. No days dropped below 20 °C during the month, with 27 consecutive days above 23 °C between the 2nd and 28th, the equal third longest autumn mild spell on record.
The mean minimum temperature at Sydney Observatory Hill was 18.9 °C, 1.3 °C above the historical average. Fourteen nights reached at least 20 °C, well above the historical average of 4 warm nights and the most since 14 warm nights in 2007. The mean temperature at Sydney Observatory Hill was consequently 22.6 °C, 1.5 °C above the historical average and the equal 6th warmest on record.
Other phenomena
The prevailing wind direction at Sydney Airport was northeasterly, with 52% of 3pm winds between ENE and NNE, above the March average of 33%, while just 35% were between SE and SSW (average 40%). There were seven strong wind days reported at the airport, with a maximum wind gust of 72 km/h at the airport on the 17th and 89 km/h at Bankstown on the 27th.
Sydney Airport recorded an average of 7.8 hours of bright sunshine during March, well above the historical average of 6.9 hours and the sunniest March since 8.9 hours in 2008. One thunderstorm was reported at Sydney Airport on the 22nd, with reports of hail, with further storms in the Sydney region on the 23rd and 24th.

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Sydney - Greater Sydney using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Tuesday 2 April 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
