Northern Territory in July 2015: a very warm end to the month

July maximum temperatures were warmer than average in the north of the Territory and cooler than average in the south. Minimum temperatures were below average in the southern Arnhem Land and central parts of the Territory. Northeastern parts of the Territory recorded above-average rainfall.

  • Two notable rainfall events
  • Overall wetter than average in Arnhem Land
  • Mean maximum temperatures were above average in the Top End and below average in the south of the Territory
  • Several daily maximum temperature records broken on the 26th, 27th and 31st
There were two notable rainfall events during July. At the beginning of the month, a moist easterly flow over northern Australia produced generally light to moderate falls in the eastern Top End. The wettest day was at Alcan Minesite with 18.2 mm during the 24 hours to 9 am on the 2nd. Towards the end of the month, a cloudband associated with a surface trough and broad upper-level trough extended into southern parts of the Northern Territory and delivered some light rainfall to the Alice Springs District. Rainfall was higher than averager in Arnhem Land and below-average across the centre of the Territory. Darwin Airport recorded no rain during the month of July, which is typical for the dry season.

Overall, July experienced above-average day-time temperatures in the Top End, while below-average maximum temperatures were recorded in some southern parts of the Territory. Towards the end of the month, some record high daily maximum temperatures were experienced in the Darwin–Daly and Roper–McArthur districts. The highest temperature was 36.8 °C at Douglas River on the 26th, some 0.2 °C above the previous July record for that location set in 1998. Minimum temperatures were below average in central areas and in the southern parts of Arnhem Land. The lowest overnight temperature was at Alice Springs and Arltunga, both with –5 °C on the 20th. Territory Grape Farm observed –3 °C also on the 20th; the coldest overnight temperature on record for this station. The cold temperatures were due to a strong high in the Bight which brought a cool, fresh and dry flow over the southern end of the Territory.  For the month as a whole, Darwin Airport had slightly above-average maximum temperatures and slightly below-average minimum temperatures.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Northern Territory using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Tuesday 4 August 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
