Monday, 3 October 2016 - Monthly Climate Summary for Northern Territory - Product code IDCKGC12R0
Northern Territory in September 2016: Very wet start to the build up
Rainfall across the Northern Territory was the highest ever observed in September. Warm conditions were again a feature, although below average daytime temperatures were observed in the southern half of the NT. Overnight temperatures were well above average throughout.
Wettest September on record
- The Northern Territory observed more rainfall than any previous September on record. Territory-wide, nearly seven times the average rainfall was recorded
- Rainfall in the southern half of the NT was due to rain-bearing cloudbands which moved across the region several times during the month
- The bulk of the rain in the north fell on the 19th and 20th as tropical moisture from the north combined with a deep low-pressure trough
- Many sites in the north had their highest September daily rainfall on record during this two-day period. Many sites also had their highest total September rainfall on record or highest in several decades
Warm conditions continue
- Territory-wide, daytime temperatures were 0.10 °C above average, although maximum temperatures were significantly above average in the northern half of the NT
- Overnight temperatures were well above average in all districts, apart from the far south. Overall, the mean minimum temperature was 2.19 °C above average, the ninth-warmest on record
- Several sites had their highest September mean daily minimum temperature on record or highest for several decades, including Darwin, with 24.7 °C, second only to 1992 when the mean daily minimum was 24.9 °C
- A few sites had their coldest September day (lowest maximum temperature) on record on the 19th, as a result of the exceptional rain which affected the Top End.

Notes
The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Northern Territory using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 3 October 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
