Northern Territory in February 2019: Very warm, very dry
Continuing on from the very warm past two months, temperatures in the Northern Territory during February 2019 were well above average, particularly with respect to daytime temperatures. Rainfall across the Territory was mostly very much below average, with no significant monsoonal activity during February across the Top End.
Warmest February since 1986
- Daytime temperatures across the NT were very much above average virtually everywhere, apart from a region along the eastern border: averaged across the Territory, the mean maximum temperature in February was 2.77 °C above the long-term average, the 4th-highest on record and highest since 1986
- Some of the southeastern NT saw cooler than average overnight temperatures, although in the northern half, overnight temperatures were mostly very much above average: averaged across the Territory, the mean minimum temperature in February was 0.96 °C above the long-term average and 9th-highest on record
- The mean temperature (maximum and minimum combined) was 1.87 °C above the long-term average, the 4th-highest on record and highest since 1986
- Parts of the central NT had a monthly maximum temperature in excess of 6 °C above average: several locations in this area and more broadly across the NT had their highest February temperature, including Walungurru which had an NT record February temperature of 46.4 °C on the 19th; other sites had either highest February mean daily maximum temperature on record or highest for at least 20 years
- Many overnight temperature records were also broken during the month with several sites having either their warmest February night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record, highest February mean daily minimum temperature on record or highest for at least 25 years
- With very warm days and nights for most of the Territory, many sites accordingly had either their highest February mean temperature on record or highest for at least 30 years
- The summer months of December to February were the warmest in 109 years of record across the Territory: the mean maximum (3.25 °C), mean minimum (2.08 °C) and mean temperature (2.67 °C) were well above previous long-term records, by approximately one to one and a half degrees
- An extraordinary heat record occurred at Rabbit Flat, in the Tanami District, with the daily maximum temperature above 39 °C every day of the December to February period
Poor wet season continues
- Apart from a small area along the eastern border, rainfall across the Territory was below average: Territory-wide, rainfall during February was 64% of normal, the lowest since 1989
- Much of the Top End and Carpentaria district had rainfall totals of 100 mm to 200 mm below the monthly average, and many sites had either their lowest total February rainfall on record or lowest for at least 20 years
- In the December to February period, only 49% of normal rainfall was observed across the NT, the 4th-lowest on record for this period; for the wet season to date (October to February), only 35% of normal rainfall total was recorded, the lowest since 1982-83
Darwin Airport
- Total rainfall for Darwin Airport was 171.6 mm, which is 46% of the long-term average of 371.9 mm
- The mean daily maximum temperature for Darwin Airport was 33.1 °C, which is 1.7 °C above the long-term average of 31.4 °C. The warmest day was 34.6 °C on the 22nd, and the coolest day was on the 4th when the temperature reached 29.7 °C

Severe weather across the NT
- A severe wind gust of nearly 130 km/h was generated by a thunderstorm at Victoria River Downs on the 5th
- Thunderstorms affected the Daly and Carpentaria districts, generating a gust of 107 km/h at McArthur River Mine on the 21st
- A thunderstorm squall-line which moved across the central NT produced a gust of 115 km/h at Tindal on the 23rd

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Northern Territory using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Friday 1 March 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
