Northern Territory in February 2021: wet in the north and southwest; cool days, warm nights

Rainfall across the Northern Territory in February was above the long-term average, with much of the north and parts of the south-west recording above average totals during the month. Daytime temperatures were mostly below the long-term average with night-time temperatures generally above average.

Persistent rainfall in the north

  • The month started with an active monsoon across the Top End, and follow-up tropical troughs generated widespread persistent rainfall across much of the northern half of the NT.
  • North of about Elliott, rainfall was mostly above the long-term February average; the far south-west of the Territory also observed above average rain while elsewhere, rainfall was close to average.
  • Territory-wide, rainfall was 22% above the long-term average.
  • Two sites in the Carpentaria District, Daly Waters and Nathan River, had their highest February daily rainfall on record, with Nathan River also having its highest total February rainfall for at least 20 years.
  • Rainfall for the wet season to-date (October 2020–February 2021) across the NT was 32% above the long-term average, the highest since 2016-17.

Mostly cool days with generally warm nights

  • Daytime temperatures were average to below average across all the NT, apart from a small area in the south-east; the regular rainfall and associated cloud cover was likely the main factor.
  • Across the NT, the mean maximum temperature was 0.36 °C below the long-term average; Lajamanu in the central west had its coldest February day (lowest maximum temperature) on record on the 8th.
  • Apart from parts of the south-western NT, night-time temperatures were above average during February.
  • Averaged across the Territory, the mean minimum temperature was 0.11 °C above the long-term average.
  • For the wet season to date (October–February), the area-averaged mean maximum temperature is 0.30 °C above average and the mean minimum temperature is 1.14 °C above the long-term average and fifth-highest on record.

Severe weather

  • 4 February: widespread thunderstorm activity across the north-western Top End generated a 100 km/h gust at Darwin Harbour.
  • 5 February: heavy rainfall from slow-moving thunderstorms near Katherine produced 60.5 mm in 30 minutes and 79.0 mm rain in 1 hour at Seventeen Mile Creek; both rainfall rates have an Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP) of between 2 and 5%.
  • 13 February: thunderstorms in the southern NT generated heavy rainfall including a 30-minute fall of 32.0 mm and a 1-hour fall of 38.0 mm at Bond Springs; both rainfall rates have an Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP) of between 5 and 10%.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Northern Territory using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Monday 1 March 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
