  • 7th wettest March on record (since 1900);
  • Cooler than average minimum temperatures

Rainfall

A tropical low was located near the tip of Fraser Island on the 4th, and moved in a south west direction. By the 5th, the low pressure system was located over land just west of Double Island Point and moved offshore by the evening of the 5th. Daily rainfall totals were in the order of 100 to 150 mm, with Eumundi recording 202mm to 9am on the 6th.

On the 15th, a low embedded in the monsoon trough over the Northern Territory moved east, and was located over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. Squally, north west monsoon winds and heavy rain fell as a result of this slow moving tropical low. Several severe weather warnings were issued for heavy rain, abnormally high tides and damaging winds over northern and central districts between the 15th and 19th.

The low drifted in a south east direction and was located over the the Central Highlands by the 22nd.  In the week ending 22nd March, northern and central districts had received rainfall in the range of 100 to 400mm. (See weekly rainfall map)

On the 22nd, a trough extended from the remnant monsoonal low located over the Central Highlands, down to a second low near the Sunshine Coast. A slow moving, severe thunderstorm developed on the convergence zone on the low near the Sunshine Coast, and was slow moving for a number of hours. Phenomenal daily rainfall totals - in the order of 300 to 400 mm - were recorded in the area.

Some sites had their highest March daily rainfall on record. See a map of total rainfall. See a map of rainfall deciles.

The wettest overall for March was Mt Sophia with 1642.0 mm, then Babinda Post Office with 1303.0 mm. Record monthly rainfall occurred at some stations in the North Tropical Coast, and Burnett districts:highest total March rainfall on record  The highest daily rainfall was Daradgee (~5km north west of Innisfail) with 363 mm on the 26th.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 2 April 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 9 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
