Queensland in August 2012: Dry, warm days, cold nights

•    Approximately 50% of the state (by area) recorded below average rainfall (mainly the southern half of the state)
•    There were potentially 31 low monthly rainfall records
•    Around 55% of the state recorded above average maximum temperatures (mainly in the south and west)
•    Average minimum temperatures were recorded for 90% of the state 
•    There were 7 daily temperature and 1 monthly temperature records
•    The record dry spell of 41 consecutive days of zero rainfall for Brisbane (July & August only) broke the previous record of  38 days in 1991

Rainfall

The Queensland area averaged rainfall for August was 3.2 mm (the lowest since 2009)

The wettest overall was Allingham Forrest Drive with 86.6 mm, followed by Lady Elliot Island with 83.4 mm, followed by Daradgee with 80.0 mm.

Some sites had their lowest total August rainfall on record. Some sites had their lowest total August rainfall for at least 20 years.

The wettest single day was at Lady Elliot Island with 73.0 mm on the 26th, followed by Allingham Forrest Drive with 58.0 mm on the 29th, followed by Mt Joseph TM with 47.2 mm on the 14th.

Weekly rainfall summary 

Up to 7th: a strong high pressure ridge resulted in little or no rainfall across most of Australia;
8 to 14th: little or no rainfall was recorded across most of Queensland;
15 to 21st: falls above 5 mm were scattered in areas of the Queensland coast between Mackay and Cooktown;
22 to 28th: from mid-week, a stable surface trough triggered thunderstorms across much of south-eastern Queensland, with further storms near Rockhampton at the end of the week. Falls above 25 mm were recorded in parts of Cairns and Rockhampton. Falls of between 5 and 25 mm were recorded in parts of eastern Queensland, whereas western Queensland recorded little or no rainfall during the week.

Temperature

The Queensland area averaged mean temperature (see notes section) was 0.32 °C below the long-term average of 17.8 °C (1961-1990).

The warmest on average was Coconut Island with 26.5 °C, followed by Horn Island with 26.4 °C, followed by Weipa Aero with 25.2 °C.

The coolest on average was Applethorpe with 8.5 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 8.6 °C, followed by Warwick with 10.5 °C.

Maximum temperature

The Queensland area averaged maximum temperature (see notes section) was 0.93 °C below the long-term average of 25.1 °C (1961-1990).

The hottest day was at Normanton Airport with 37.0 °C on the 24th, followed by Birdsville Airport with 36.3 °C on the 22nd, followed by Trepell Airport with 36.1 °C on the 23rd.

The warmest days on average were at Scherger RAAF with 32.5 °C, followed by Weipa Aero with 32.3 °C, followed by Kowanyama Airport with 32.0 °C.

The coolest days on average were at Applethorpe with 16.4 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 17.6 °C, followed by Toowoomba Airport with 19.0 °C.

The coldest day was at Applethorpe with 10.5 °C on the 10th, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 11.7 °C on the 10th, followed by Applethorpe with 11.9 °C on the 18th.

Minimum temperature

The Queensland area averaged minimum temperature (see notes section) was 1.58 °C below the long-term average of 10.4 °C (1961-1990), the lowest since 1989.

The coldest night was at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with -5.6 °C on the 8th, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with -5.0 °C on the 4th, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with -4.8 °C on the 7th, followed by Applethorpe with -4.8 °C on the 8th.

The coolest nights on average were at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with -0.5 °C, followed by Applethorpe with 0.6 °C, followed by Oakey Aero with 0.8 °C.

The warmest nights on average were at Coconut Island with 24.0 °C, followed by Horn Island with 23.1 °C, followed by Willis Island with 22.5 °C.

The warmest night was at Horn Island with 25.1 °C on the 22nd, followed by Coconut Island with 25.1 °C on the 23rd, followed by Coconut Island with 25.1 °C on the 24th, followed by Coconut Island with 25.0 °C on the 22nd, followed by Horn Island with 25.0 °C on the 23rd, followed by Coconut Island with 25.0 °C on the 25th, followed by Coconut Island with 24.9 °C on the 21st, followed by Horn Island with 24.9 °C on the 21st.
