Queensland in May 2014: A warm end to the month, very dry across the state

A cold snap at the start of May was short-lived, before unusually warm daytime and overnight temperatures returned, and persisted until the end of the month. The most abnormally warm conditions occurred in southern inland Queensland between 8 and 26 May when a near-stationary blocking high-pressure system over the Tasman Sea resulted in a very warm north to northwesterly airflow from northern Australia that affected inland Queensland. Special Climate Statement 49 detailing the event is available on the Bureau's website.

As well as prolonged warmth, the persistent high-pressure system brought onshore easterly winds over coastal Queensland, resulting in persistent wet conditions over parts of the central and northern Queensland coast. Mackay had 13 consecutive days of rain from 13 to 25 May (equalling its record-long wet spell for May), and Cairns had 14 consecutive days of rain from 11 to 24 May (second longest wet spell behind the 19-day spell from 2 to 20 May in 1959). Despite the record run of wet-days, rainfall totals were near-average for these sites.

Rainfall was less than one third of the average through a large expanse of inland Queensland. The central interior, southern inland Queensland, and parts of the western Central Coast were in the lowest 10% of May rainfall records compounding the current rainfall deficiencies across much of the state. Some isolated thunderstorms brought rainfall over the interior during the month, however most of the northwest and southern interior recorded little or no rainfall.

  • Tenth-warmest maximum temperatures state-wide, 1.30 °C  above the 1961-90 average
  • State-wide, minimum temperatures the highest since 2007, 1.13 °C above the 1961-90 average
  • Eighth-warmest mean temperature state-wide, 1.22 °C above the 1961-90 average

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 2 June 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 9 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
