Saturday, 1 November 2014 - Monthly Climate Summary for Queensland - Product code IDCKGC14R0
Queensland in October 2014: A dry and hot month
October rainfall was well below average throughout the state, with some places receiving their lowest October rainfall on record. There were several days in October where little or no rainfall was recorded state-wide. Rainfall was mostly confined to the central interior, the southeast quarter and the north tropical coast. At the beginning of the month, an upper level trough over the state's interior triggered thunderstorms and showers over the Maranoa and Warrego district in the southern interior. Between the 10th and the 14th, a surface trough gradually deepened as it slowly tracked eastwards across the central and southern interior. The surface trough generated thunderstorms, resulting in moderate daily rainfall totals across the southeast, Central West, and the northern Maranoa and Warrego districts. Thunderstorms also occurred throughout the northern parts of Cape York Peninsula and across the north tropical coast with only light falls recorded.
Statewide average temperatures were above normal for October, with mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures +1.77 °C and +0.34 °C above the long-term average respectively. The mean maximum temperature was ranked the seventh-warmest on record. Daily maximum and minimum temperatures were exceptionally high near the end of the month, with a number of sites in the southern interior and southeast coast recording their hottest October day on record, and the warmest night on record for southeast coastal sites. The hot conditions persisted for a few days, with the hottest days and nights occurring on the 26th and 27th as hot northerly winds were directed over southern districts ahead of a surface trough.
- Ninth-lowest rainfall on record
- Seventh-highest mean maximum temperature on record
- Hot days and warm nights near the end of month

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 7 pm on Saturday 1 November 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
