Queensland in April 2016: A very warm month; dry across much of the State

Rainfall was well below average across large parts of Queensland during April. The April statewide mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures were the warmest on record for Queensland.

  • Warmest April on record for Queensland
  • Warmest mean maximum temperature on record for Queensland
  • Warmest mean minimum temperature on record for Queensland
  • Drier than usual across much of the State

April was relatively dry across much of the State. Near-average rainfall was recorded through the central interior, parts of the northwest and southwest, and along small parts of the central and north tropical coasts. Only small pockets in the Gulf Country recorded above average rainfall.

The first week of the month remained mostly dry, despite numerous rain events during the month. A moist, onshore easterly flow brought moderate falls to the north tropical coast and adjacent inland areas between the 7th and 11th. A surface trough extending from the Gulf Country into the southeastern interior around the 9th, triggered thunderstorm activity with light to moderate rainfall totals recorded about the southern border on the 10th, the central interior on the 11th, and the southeast on the 12th. Southeasterly trade winds brought showers to the central coast from the 14th, with an upper-level trough enhancing this activity about the north tropical and central coasts on the 15th and 16th. A moist onshore flow continued to generate persistent shower activity along the east coast, from the 20th to the end of the month.

Queensland had its warmest April on record, with the statewide mean temperature anomaly 2.7 °C above the long-term average (the previous record was +2.21 in 2005). Queensland's mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures were also the warmest on record for April, 2.9 °C and 2.5 °C above the historical average, respectively.

In the first half of the month, warm days occurred across western, central and southern Queensland, while northern districts recorded near-average maximum temperatures. Warm northwesterly winds persisted until mid-month over inland Queensland. The eastern parts of the State had near-average daytime temperature during the third week, due to cool onshore southeasterly winds. The last week saw cooler daytime temperatures return to the east coast and southeastern districts. The unusually warm daytime temperatures resulted in numerous locations recording their highest April mean daily maximum temperature on record.

Very warm nights were recorded in the central and southern interior during the first week of April, and some sites had their warmest April night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record. Warmer than usual overnight temperatures continued across western and southern districts up to the third week of the month. Cooler nights were recorded in western and eastern districts from about the 25th until the end of the month, while remaining parts of the State had near-average overnight temperatures. As a result of the persistent warmth, numerous locations had their highest April mean daily minimum temperature on record.

April is the end of the tropical cyclone season. Tropical cyclone Tatiana was the only system that formed in the Eastern region during the 2015-16 season. There were three tropical cyclones in the Australian region during the 2015-16 season: Stan, Tatiana and Uriah.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 2 May 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
