Brisbane in May 2016: Very warm days with little rainfall
Very warm days were experienced in Brisbane during May, along with above average night time temperatures at most locations. May rainfall was well below average across the metropolitan area.
- Warmest daytime temperatures on record for Brisbane
- Very warm daytime temperatures across the metropolitan
- Above average overnight temperatures; cooler at the end of month
- A very dry month in Brisbane
Rainfall was well below average across the metropolitan area, with Logan City Water Treatment Plant receiving its lowest May rainfall on record. Much of the May rainfall was recorded at the start of the month. A weak surface trough lingered about eastern parts of the State, with showers and a moist onshore flow producing rainfall totals up to 10 mm. Thunderstorms and showers formed near the surface trough on the 2nd and 3rd, resulting in light to moderate rainfall totals at all metropolitan sites. Some onshore showers on the 8th produced light falls, but not at all locations. The remainder of the month was dry.
Both mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures were very warm during May.
Mean maximum temperatures were more than 2 °C above the long-term average at all metropolitan sites. The warmth was persistent throughout most of the month. This resulted in Brisbane City, and some other locations, having their warmest mean daily maximum temperature on record. The warm daytime temperatures eased near the end of the month, as cool air penetrated southern parts of the State and tempered the hot days.
Mean minimum temperatures were above average at all metropolitan sites, except Amberley. Brisbane Aero had its highest May mean daily maximum temperature on record. Warmer than average nights persisted across the metropolitan area during the first half of the month, before a cool and dry airmass extended through much of the State on the 12th. The cool change saw overnight temperatures drop well below average, with some locations reporting minima up to 8 °C below the May average. The cold spell was short-lived and a return to near- and above-average night time temperatures was recorded in the third week of May. This was followed by colder nights to the end of the month.

Notes
The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Brisbane using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Wednesday 1 June 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
