Queensland in September 2016:  Third-wettest September on record

Statewide, it was the third-wettest September, following 2010 and 1906. September monthly rainfall was particularly high over southwestern parts, where many districts had their highest totals on record. Flooding occurred in numerous catchments during September. Daytime temperatures were cooler than usual in western and southern Queensland, and nights were warm in the east.

Third-wettest September on record

• Averaged across the State, it was the third-wettest September on record, following 2010 and 1906
• A significant proportion of western and southern Queensland had their wettest September on record
• A surface and upper-level trough produced moderate to locally heavy falls in southwest Queensland at the start of the month, delaying the Birdsville Races. 
• Between the 14th and the 21st a series of upper-level troughs affected western and southern Queensland, with a number of locations reporting their highest September daily rainfall on record including Quilpie, Mt Isa and Bedourie.
  
• Numerous rain-bearing systems throughout the month contributed to many locations reporting their highest total September rainfall on record including Longreach, Charleville and Injune.

Cool daytime temperatures in the west; warm nights in the east

• The mean maximum temperature for September was the tenth-coolest on record, the lowest since 1984
• Daytime temperatures were cool across the southwest and southern parts, with some locations reporting their lowest September mean daily maximum temperature on record or their lowest for several decades

Warm nights in the east

• Queensland had its sixth-warmest mean minimum temperatures on record
• Warm overnight temperatures were reported in a broad band along the east coast, particularly later in the month, where some sites had their warmest September night on record (highest daily minimum temperature) 

Flooding in Queensland

• Following heavy rain during August, flooding continued in the Diamantina, Bulloo and Warrego catchments during early September
• Widespread rainfall across much of western and southern Queensland during September resulted in renewed river-level rises across catchments already in flood, and extended the flood affected areas to include the Georgina, Eyre, Thomson, Barcoo, Cooper, Paroo, Wallam, Maranoa, Balonne, Moonie, Weir, Macintyre and Dawson catchments
• The majority of catchments experienced minor to moderate flooding, though major flood levels were recorded in the Macintyre, Warrego and Balonne catchments
