Queensland in March 2017: Severe tropical cyclone Debbie brought flooding rain; very warm days and nights across the State

Severe tropical cyclone Debbie made landfall on the 28th, crossing at Airlie Beach as a category 4 system. Temperatures were very warm for the month, with mean, maximum and minimum temperatures all in the top four warmest on record.

Well above average rainfall from Bowen to the southeast, record high in places; dry in the west

  • Overall, rainfall was well above average along the east coast and adjacent inland districts from about Bowen to the greater southeast of Queensland
  • Numerous locations had their highest total March rainfall on record or in several decades
  • Below to well below average falls in the west and southwest, and in pockets of the far northeast coast; near average falls elsewhere
  • Active monsoon trough during March; but near-average falls reported across the northern tropics
  • A series of surface- and upper-level troughs produced showers and thunderstorms in eastern and southeastern parts of the State in the first half of the month
  • Moderate falls were reported in the northern interior from shower and thunderstorm activity in the middle of the month
  • A low pressure system embedded on a coastal trough near the southeast coast brought moderate to heavy falls in southeast Queensland, with another trough near the central on the 21st bringing heavy falls to the central and Capricornia coasts
  • Tropical cyclone Debbie produced heavy falls in the central coast and Whitsunday Islands as the system made landfall on the 28th
  • Widespread flooding associated with ex-tropical cyclone Debbie affected eastern, central and southeastern Queensland
  • A number of sites had their highest March daily rainfall on record

Very warm days and nights overall

Severe tropical cyclone Debbie produced heavy falls and flooding

  • Severe tropical cyclone Debbie make landfall around midday on the 28th as a category 4 system
  • Hamilton Island recorded a wind gust of 263 km/h as Debbie made landfall
  • Heavy rainfall and destructive winds were experienced from about Bowen to Mackay.
  • As Debbie crossed and tracked inland, weakening to an ex-tropical cyclone, flooding occurred in numerous river catchments associated with heavy rainfall
  • Riverine flooding occurred in some coastal catchments from Bowen and south to the New South Wales border, extending inland to parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Maranoa and Warrego, and Darling Downs districts
  • Major flooding still continues in some catchments; and in northern New South Wales into April

Brisbane's maximum and minimum temperature anomalies calculated using the old (closed) and current (open) sites

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 7 am on Monday 3 April 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
