Queensland in March 2018: Tropical cyclone Nora; flooding in the northern tropics
Rainfall was well above average in the north and west of the State; with record high daily and monthly totals in the northwest and northern interior. Queensland as a whole had its wettest March since 2012. Tropical cyclone Nora made landfall on the west coast of the Cape York Peninsula on the 24th. Flooding affected much of the northern tropics, and parts of western Queensland.
Record wet in the northwest and northern interior
- Queensland had its 14th-wettest March on record and its wettest March since 2012
- Numerous locations had their highest March daily rainfall and highest March total rainfall on record
- A low pressure centre embedded on the surface trough deepened to the west of Townsville, with heavy rainfall recorded about the north tropical coast on the 1st
- The low drifted slowly west across the northern interior and then the northwest; Heavy rainfall accompanied the passage of the low and produced record high daily rainfall at Carsland, Ripple Downs and The Monument
- A deep trough extended from the northwest, through to central and southeastern Queensland and produced moderate to heavy falls across most of the west and southern inland parts between the 4th and 8th
- Several days of heavy rainfall affected the north tropical coast, with rainfall totals in excess of 700 mm recorded at several locations between the 7th and 10th
- A developing low pressure system intensified into tropical cyclone Nora on the 23rd, and made landfall on the 24th between Pormpuraaw and Kowanyama
- The system continued to track along the west coast of Cape York Peninsula before moving inland and weakening to a tropical low; Very heavy rainfall was recorded with some locations in the northern interior reporting their highest March daily rainfall on record
- Remnants of ex-tropical cyclone Nora and the associated monsoon trough produced extremely heavy falls about the north tropical coast between the 26th and 28th, with 3-day rainfall totals in excess of 500 mm recorded between Port Douglas and Ingham
Cool days in the north; warm nights for much of Queensland
- Queensland's mean maximum temperature was 0.14 °C below the long-term average, and the lowest since 2012
- Mean maximum temperatures were well below average in the northwest, northern interior and central west; record cool days overall around the Upper Flinders and Northern Goldfields district
- Daytime temperatures were warmer than usual along the southern border, with remaining parts of the State reporting near-average mean maximum temperatures
- Queensland's mean minimum temperature was 1.07 °C above the long-term average, and the tenth-warmest on record for March
- Overnight temperatures were well above average in the southwest, southern interior and southeast coast; Cunnamulla had its highest March mean daily minimum temperature on record
- Above average nights were experienced across most of the southern half and east coast of Queensland, while remaining parts of the State were near-average
- A number of locations in the southern interior had their warmest March night on record on the 2nd or 3rd, as a result of overnight cloud cover; Point Lookout also had its equal warmest March day on record on the 4th
Flooding and tropical cyclones
- Numerous flood events affected Queensland during March, starting with major flooding on the north tropical coast in the Herbert, Tully and Murray, Johnstone, and the Mulgrave and Russell catchments
- Major flooding then affected the Gulf Country, most notably the Flinders, where major flooding occurred at Cloncurry and Walkers Bend following heavy rainfall around the 3rd
- Following this, flooding occurred in river catchments in the southwest and southern inland parts of Queensland, with major flooding at Winton, and moderate flooding at Longreach
- Flood peaks in southwestern catchments are still making their way into New South Wales and South Australia
- Tropical cyclone Linda formed well off the Queensland coast on the 13th, reaching category 1 for around 12 hours, before weakening to below tropical cyclone strength on the morning of the 14th
- Linda produced large waves, with maximum wave heights of up to 8 metres about the southern Queensland coast, and many beaches south of Fraser Island closed due to dangerous surf on the 14th and 15th
- Tropical cyclone Nora made landfall on the 24th between Pormpuraaw and Kowanyama on the west coast of the Cape York Peninsula
- The remnants of Nora caused renewed major flooding in the Herbert, Tully and Murray, and Mulgrave and Russell catchments, along with the Daintree and Barron catchments; moderate flooding occurred at Daintree Village in the Daintree and major flooding occurred at Kamerunga Bridge
- Flash flooding occurred around Cairns on the 26th and Ingham township was inundated by flooding twice during March, at the start and then the end of the month

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Tuesday 3 April 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on
observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from
site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of
record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the
climate record for the site, based on the decile
ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in
decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile
8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time
as a percentage
of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
