Queensland in July 2018: Warm days overall; dry in the west and south

Rainfall was below average across much of western, southern and the eastern interior of Queensland. Above average rainfall was recorded in the northern interior and north tropical coast. The statewide mean maximum temperature was the fourth-warmest on record for July. Overnight temperatures were warmer than usual in the far north, and cooler than usual in southern Queensland. Widespread frosts were experienced across western districts, and the central and southern interior in the middle of the month.

Dry in the west and south; above average falls in the northern tropics

  • Statewide rainfall was more than 70% below the long-term average, and the driest since 2014
  • Large areas of western, southern and the eastern interior of Queensland recorded below average rainfall;  above average rainfall was recorded in the northern interior and about the north tropical coast
  • Remaining areas in the northwest, central west and the central coast recorded near-average rainfall
  • At the start of the month, an inland surface trough and upper-level disturbance generated thunderstorms and showers across southern Queensland while in the north, a southeasterly onshore airflow resulted in showers and moderate falls about the north tropical coast
  • A weak low pressure system off the Fraser Coast produced showers and drizzle in coastal and some inland areas in the southeast; heavier falls were recorded around coastal islands including Stradbroke and Moreton Islands; Point Lookout had its highest July daily rainfall on record on the 2nd
  • Further shower activity affected southeastern parts in an onshore southeasterly flow on the 11th and 12th
  • Remaining parts of the State had little or no rainfall for the rest of the month apart from intermittent, onshore showers about the north tropical Queensland coast

Warm days overall; some cold nights throughout the month

  • Queensland's mean maximum temperature was the fourth-warmest on record, and 1.99 °C above the long-term average
  • Warmer than usual days persisted during the first week, with Lady Elliott Island reporting its highest July daily maximum temperature on record on the 6th
  • A cool, dry air mass dominated much of the State in the middle of the month, with cooler than usual days in western and southern districts
  • Clear, warm and sunny days were experienced across Queensland for most of the second half of July, resulting in some locations having their highest July mean daily maximum temperature on record
  • Mean minimum temperatures were slightly warmer than average for the State as a whole; warmer than usual about the far north, and colder than usual in the southwest and inland southern parts
  • Overnight temperatures were warmer than usual during the first week across Queensland, with above average temperature spreading though western and southern districts ahead of a surface trough
  • This culminated into a very warm night over southeastern Queensland on the 7th; Amberley and Warwick had their warmest July night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record
  • Following a spell of warm nights, a cool and dry air mass dominated much of Queensland during the middle of the month, with widespread morning frosts over western districts, and the central and southern interior
  • Mostly clear and cool nights were experienced across the State until the end of the month

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 1 August 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
