Queensland in December 2018: tropical cyclone Owen produced widespread falls in the east

Tropical cyclone Owen brought moderate to locally heavy falls to the north and east of the State. Mean maximum temperatures were warmer than usual in the north and the western half of Queensland. Overnight temperatures were warmer than average across most of Queensland.

Rainfall above average

  • December rainfall was well above average in eastern Queensland, due to the passage of ex-tropical cyclone Owen
  • Below average December rainfall was recorded in western Queensland, but near-average elsewhere
  • A surface trough extending the east coast produced showers and storms, with moderate falls in eastern and northern Queensland at the start of the month
  • Ex-tropical cyclone Owen crossed the coast near Port Douglas at around 3am on 10 December, and moved westwards across northern Queensland, and brought heavy rainfall to the north tropical coast, with daily rainfall totals ranging from 250 mm to 350 mm
  • Ex-tropical cyclone Owen re-intensified to a category 1 system on the evening of 11 December in the Gulf of Carpentaria, and reached category 2 strength by the 12th
  • Severe tropical cyclone Owen crossed the west coast of the Cape York Peninsula on 15 December and the system weakened to a tropical low and tracked across the northern tropics and then down the north tropical to central coasts
  • Daily rainfall totals in excess of 400 mm were recorded around Lucinda to Ingham, and Halifax recorded 678 mm to 9am on 16 December; some sites had their highest December daily rainfall on record or their highest total December rainfall on record
  • An active monsoon trough at the end of the month produced moderate to locally heavy falls in the north tropical coast and Cape York Peninsula
  • A low pressure system intensified over the Gulf of Carpentaria, and formed into tropical cyclone Penny early on 1 January 2019

Daytime temperatures above average in the north and west

Severe thunderstorms

  • Severe thunderstorms produced damaging winds that brought down trees and powerlines around Mareeba on the 3rd, along with hail up to 2 cm at Atherton on the 4th
  • There were reports of roof damage and fallen trees near Eidsvold and Monto on the 4th, due to severe thunderstorms

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 2 January 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
