Queensland in February 2019: Wettest February on record in the northern tropics, but dry in the south

Heavy rainfall resulted in flooding in the northwest and northern tropics, while southern Queensland reported well below average rainfall for the month. Both mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures were cooler than usual in the northwest, and warmer than average along the northeast coast and large parts of southern Queensland.

Record wet and flooding in the north; well below average rainfall in southern Queensland

  • Heavy rainfall resulted in flooding in the northwest and northern tropics, as a monsoon trough remained near-stationary at the start of February; some sites had their highest February daily rainfall on record or their highest total February rainfall on record
  • Very heavy rainfall continued in the north tropical to central coast into February; in the northwest a low embedded on the monsoon trough produced very heavy rainfall, with major flooding at Walkers Bend on the Flinders river by the 2nd
  • The low weakened from the 5th, and moved slowly east to the base of the Cape York Peninsula by the 6th. Across the northern interior of Queensland, the highest daily rainfall totals were observed from Julia Creek to Richmond, with major flooding in the Gulf Rivers, including the Gilbert, Leichardt, Flinders and Norman rivers
  • In the seven days to 4 February, Townsville Aero recorded 1052.8 mm, and 1257.0 mm in the ten days to 8 February; both multi-day totals were new records
  • Further information about the heavy rainfall in the northern tropics can be found in the Special Climate Statement An extended period of heavy rainfall and flooding in tropical Queensland
  • In contrast, southern Queensland had well below average rainfall for the month, and the lowest on record at some locations in the central and southern interior

Warmer than usual days in the north and southeast

Tropical cyclone Oma

  • Tropical cyclone Oma tracked towards the southeast Queensland coast in late February, but had very little impact in terms of rainfall
  • The system generated large waves and powerful surf from the Capricornia coast to northern New South Wales, along with strong winds along the southeast Queensland coast

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Friday 1 March 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
