Queensland in November 2019: dry and hot in the east

Rainfall was well below average along the east coast and adjacent inland districts of Queensland, and the fourth-driest November on record of the State as a whole. Mean maximum temperatures were well above average across most of the State, and some areas had their warmest November mean maximum on record.

For the year-to-date, rainfall for Queensland is above average in the northern tropics and northwest, and below average in the southeastern quarter of the State, with areas of lowest on record persisting in the southern Darling Downs. Year-to-date temperatures are more than a degree warmer than average for the mean, maximum and minimum temperatures, with record warm days persisting in the greater southeast.

Dry in eastern Queensland, record dry in some parts

  • Averaged across the State, it was the fourth-driest November on record for the State as a whole
  • Areas around the north tropical coast between Cooktown and Ingham, and places in the Southern Downs and South East Coast District had their lowest total November rainfall on record or their lowest total November rainfall for several decades
  • Rainfall was close to average in parts of western Queensland, and above average in an area of the southwest due to showers and thunderstorms at the start of the month

Very hot days overall, record warm in some locations

  • Mean maximum temperatures were well above average across most of the State, with some areas in the east reporting their warmest November mean maximum on record
  • Averaged across the State, the mean maximum temperature was the third-warmest on record at 2.13 °C above average (record is +2.98 °C in 2014, then +2.17 °C in 2015)
  • Very hot and gusty north to northwesterly continental winds affected the State during the month (this is a feature of a negative Southern Annual Mode in summer), and coupled with the drier than usual conditions, saw elevated fire dangers over much of eastern Queensland. Some sites had their highest November temperature on record
  • Mean minimum temperatures were much cooler than usual in the northeast tropical and central coasts, and in far western Queensland
  • Warmer than average minima were reported around the Gulf Country, Capricornia and South East Coast districts, but close to average elsewhere
  • Averaged across the State, the mean minimum temperature was 0.54 °C above average

Bushfires and severe thunderstorms

  • Numerous bushfires were burning across eastern Queensland during November, with 15 homes lost at Cobraball (near Yeppoon) and one lost at Cooroibah (near Noosa)
  • Severe thunderstorms developed on the 17th, and produced isolated moderate falls and large hail in areas of the Sunshine Coast and northern suburbs of Brisbane

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 3 pm on Sunday 1 December 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
