Queensland in February 2020: wet in the southeast quarter

Rainfall was well above average in the southeastern quarter of the State, and in areas of the Gulf Country after tropical cyclone Esther made landfall near the Northern Territory and Queensland border. Queensland's mean maximum temperature was above average, and the mean minimum temperature was the third-warmest on record for the State as a whole.

Above average rainfall in the southeast

  • Rainfall was well above average in the southeastern quarter of the State and in areas of the Gulf Country and Cape York Peninsula, and the wettest on record in areas of the Warrego and Maranoa District
  • Some sites had their highest total February rainfall on record or their highest total February rainfall for at least 20 years
  • A monsoon trough in the north produced showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula at the beginning of the month
  • Widespread showers and thunderstorms developed over central to southern inland Queensland due to a surface trough extending from the northwest to southeast of the State
  • A near-stationary coastal trough over the southeast from the 6th generated persistent showers and thunderstorms until the middle of the month, with locally heavy falls in some areas
  • Around the 22nd, a tropical low linked to the monsoon trough intensified in the Gulf of Carpentaria, becoming tropical cyclone Esther, and making landfall near the Northern Territory and Queensland on the 24th, generating moderate to locally heavy falls across the northern tropics
  • Further south, a surface trough extended through the interior of Queensland, and interacted with an upper-level trough, enhancing showers and thunderstorms, and generating moderate to locally heavy falls through the southern inland to the Capricornia coast
  • Showers, thunderstorms and areas of rain affected much of eastern Queensland at the end of the month

Warmer than usual nights across most of the State

Flooding

  • Heavy rainfall in the first half of the month produced significant river levels in the Logan/Albert, Condamine (including in Myall, Jandowae and Charley's Creek), Noosa and Mary Rivers. River level rises in these catchments produced impacts at several townships including heavily populated areas around Logan City (Beenleigh, Eagleby), Warwick, Dalby, Chinchilla, Tewantin and Gympie
  • Heavy rainfall in the second half of the month produced very significant river levels in catchments across the Warrego and Maranoa district which recorded its highest river levels since the very significant flooding recorded in 2012. Major flood levels were recorded across the Balonne River catchment including at the townships of Surat, St George and Dirranbandi

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 4 pm on Sunday 1 March 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
