Queensland in June 2020: rainfall close to average in the east; days were warmer than usual

Rainfall was close to average in eastern parts of the State, and below average in central and western Queensland, including the southern interior.

Both mean maximum were warmer than usual across most of the State, while mean minimum temperatures were warmer than average in the north and east.

Close to average rainfall in the east, drier than usual in the west

  • Rainfall was close to average in eastern Queensland, and below average central and western parts, and the southern interior of the State
  • Much of the rainfall was confined to the eastern half of Queensland in June, with little to no rainfall recorded in western Queensland
  • A trough and cold front combination brought showers and rain over central and southern regions on the 13th, then across eastern districts the following day
  • Widespread rainfall totals of more than 15 mm were reported across the central and southeastern interior, and 15 mm to more than 25 mm in the north tropical and southeast coasts from the trough and front combination
  • The passage of a cold front over southeastern Queensland on the 20th and 21st saw widespread light falls over the southern and southeastern interior of the State
  • There were showers along parts of the north tropical, central and southeast coasts during the middle of the month

Maximum temperatures above average across the State

  • In terms of mean temperature, Queensland as a whole was 1.72 °C above average
  • Queensland's mean maximum temperature was the sixth-warmest on record, and 1.77 °C above the long-term average and the mean minimum temperature was 1.67 °C above the long-term average
  • Mean maximum temperatures were warmer than average across most of the State
  • Persistent sunny days resulted in above-average maximum temperatures, and Birdsville reported its equal highest June mean daily maximum temperature on record and Palmerville had its highest June mean daily maximum temperature for many decades
  • Mean minimum temperatures were warmer than average in the north and east of Queensland
  • Minimum temperatures were cooler than average in the southwest and parts of the far southern interior, with calm and cloud free nights bringing the occasional frost, mostly near the end of the month
  • A warm and moist air mass and thick cloud extended across eastern Queensland, with very warm nights from the 14th and a number of sites had their warmest June night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record
  • For the year-to-date (January to June), Queensland's mean maximum temperature and mean minimum temperature are both more than a degree above average

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 1 July 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
