Queensland in November 2020: second-warmest November on record; below average rainfall across large parts of the state
Rainfall was below average across most of Queensland for November, except in the Cape York Peninsula and areas in the central west, where rainfall was close to the long-term average. Despite an active La Niña phase in the Pacific Ocean, there were a lack of rain-bearing systems during the month.
It was the second-warmest November on record for Queensland in terms of mean, maximum and minimum temperatures. Mean maximum temperatures were warmer than usual across nearly all of the state except pockets of the central east coast. Mean minimum temperatures were warmer than usual across most of the state, but close to average in the far south-east and base of the Cape York Peninsula.
Dry across the south-east
- Widespread thunderstorms developed over the central and southern interior on the 8th to 10th, and over western Queensland on the 11th and 12th, before moving into eastern Queensland on the 13th.
- Storms developed over northern Queensland on the 14th, and western Queensland on the 15th and 16th.
- A surface trough extended from the north-west to the south-east from the 25th, and thunderstorms developed in the north-west, central west and small parts of the south-east.
- Low pressure troughs and moist onshore flow produced showers and thunderstorms across Cape York Peninsula at the end of the month.
Second-warmest November on record
- It was the second-warmest November on record for Queensland in terms of mean temperature, 2.51 °C above the long-term average (behind 2014).
- Queensland's mean maximum temperature was 2.85 °C above the long-term average and the mean minimum temperature was 2.17 °C above the long-term average; both were the second-warmest on record after 2014.
- November saw mean maximum temperatures warmer than usual across most of the state, except for pockets of the central east coast. A few sites had their highest November mean maximum temperature on record
- Similarly, November mean minimum temperatures were warmer than usual for most of the state, except for pockets of the south-east and in the base of Cape York Peninsula.
- A low- to severe-intensity heatwave affected much of north-west to south-east Queensland from the 15th to 17th.
- From around the 23rd, another low- to severe-intensity heatwave affected much of the state west of a line from the Gulf Country to the Darling Downs. Areas in the south-west were affected by an extreme heatwave from the 27th to the end of the month.
- Birdsville reported a record run of 4 days at or above 46.0 °C in November (27 to 30 November). The previous record was 3 days from 28 to 30 November 2006. A number of sites reported their highest November daily maximum temperature on record on the 30th.
- A number of sites in central western and south-west Queensland reported their warmest November daily minimum temperature on record
- For the year-to-date (January to November), Queensland's mean maximum temperature and mean minimum temperature were both more than a degree warmer than average.

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 1 December 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on
observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from
site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of
record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the
climate record for the site, based on the decile
ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in
decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile
8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time
as a percentage
of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
