Queensland in March 2021: Wetter than usual across southern Queensland

Rainfall was very much above average across most of the southern half of Queensland, and close to average across central Queensland and the far northern Cape York Peninsula. It was drier than average from the Gulf Country across to the north tropical coast of Queensland.

Mean maximum temperatures were warmer than average across the northern half of Queensland and along the east coast to Fraser Island, and cooler than usual along the southern border. Mean minimum temperatures were warmer than average in a swathe from the north-west to south-east of the state, and along coastal parts of the Cape York Peninsula.

A wet month across southern Queensland

  • Rainfall was very much above average across most of the southern half of Queensland, and close to average across central Queensland and the far northern Cape York Peninsula.
  • Tropical cyclone Niran was located off the coast of Cairns at the start of the month, and generated moderate falls along the north tropical coast and northern Cape York Peninsula.
  • Moderate falls were recorded over western and southern Queensland from the 8th, associated with thunderstorms and showers developing in the vicinity of surface troughs.
  • A deep surface trough extended from north-west to southern inland Queensland from the 14th, and produced widespread moderate falls from north-west, central to southern parts of the state. On the 17th, an isolated, extremely heavy daily rainfall total of 550 mm was recorded at Byfield Childs Road in the Capricornia District in Queensland, with further falls over 100 mm the following day.
  • The combination of an inland trough and coastal trough along the south-east Queensland and north-east New South Wales coast, saw a very wet period commencing on the 21st in the south-east.
  • Mount Tamborine recorded 212 mm on the 22nd, and a further 225 mm on the 23rd. As the inland surface trough and low moved eastwards, moderate falls were recorded across western and southern Queensland. Flooding occurred in some western and southern rivers. Some sites had their highest March daily rainfall on record.
  • Some sites had their highest total March rainfall on record or their highest total March rainfall for at least 20 years.

Cooler than usual days in the far south, warm nights across the north

  • The March mean temperature was 0.79 °C above average.
  • The state's mean maximum temperature for March was 0.59 °C above average.
  • Mean maximum temperatures were generally cooler than usual along the southern border, due to periods of thick cloud and rain. Mean maximum temperatures were warmer than average across the northern half of Queensland and along the east coast to Fraser Island.
  • In far northern Queensland, Coconut Island had its highest March temperature on record and Kowanyama had its highest March mean daily maximum temperature on record.
  • Cooler than usual days were observed over western and south-west Queensland from the 14th, then southern and south-east Queensland from the 15th due to the passage of a cold front and surface trough. Daytime temperatures were more than 6 °C cooler than usual across western, southern and south-eastern parts between the 14th and 17th, resulting in a few sites having their coldest March day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.
  • The mean minimum temperature for Queensland as a whole was 0.98 °C above average.
  • Mean minimum temperatures were warmer than average in a swathe from the north-west to south-east of the state, and along coastal parts of the Cape York Peninsula, while close to average in remaining areas of the state.
  • Minimum temperatures were cooler than usual across southern Queensland in the last week of the month, due to clear skies and little cloud cover.
  • For the year to date, the mean temperature was 0.67 °C above average, the state's mean maximum temperature was 0.43 °C above average, and the mean minimum (overnight) temperature was 0.89 °C above average.

Tropical cyclones; flooding

  • Major flooding on the Herbert River on the north tropical coast of Queensland on 1 and 2 March, associated with tropical cyclone Niran which was located east of Cairns at the start of the month. Tropical cyclone Niran intensified into a severe tropical cyclone by the 4th, but moved south-east away from the Queensland coast.
  • Major flooding was recorded on the Logan River from the 23rd, and major flooding also occurred on the Bremer River, Warrill and Laidley creeks on the 23rd, with all peaks across these creeks and rivers easing by the 25th.
  • Major flooding on the Bulloo and Macintyre rivers from the 23rd, and major flooding on the Condamine River from the 24th. These western slow-moving western rivers remained at major flood level until the end of the month.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Thursday 1 April 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
