Queensland in April 2021: wetter than usual in the north, but dry in the west

Rainfall was above average in northern Queensland, including the Cape York Peninsula, north tropical coast, and parts of the Gulf Country.  April rainfall was below average in the west, south-west and parts of the southern interior.

Mean maximum temperatures were cooler than usual across the south-east and southern interior, and along parts of the central and Capricornia coasts, while maxima were warmer than usual about the Gulf Country and Cape York Peninsula. Mean minimum temperatures were cooler than usual across southern and the far south-west of Queensland, and very much below average (decile 1) in the southern Warrego and Maranoa. Mean minimum temperatures were warmer than usual in northern Queensland.

Wetter than usual in the north, dry in the west

  • Rainfall was above average in northern Queensland, and below average in the west, south-west and parts of the southern interior.
  • A surface trough developed over inland Queensland on the 3rd producing thunderstorms and showers with moderate falls over the central west, and the Capricornia and Herbert coasts on the 4th and 5th.
  • A coastal trough extended down the east coast of Queensland and an embedded low pressure system was located off the central Queensland coast on the 4th, and the system brought moderate to locally heavy falls to the Wide Bay and Burnett, South East Coast, and parts of the Darling Downs districts from the 5th to the 7th, with minor flooding to the Stanley River.
  • From the 6th, showers and thunderstorms produced moderate to heavy falls over parts of the Cape York Peninsula until the 14th.
  • A coastal trough located near the north tropical coast of Queensland brought heavy falls to the north tropical coast on the 19th and 20th, with the moderate falls extending across the Cape York Peninsula and Gulf Country by the 22nd. From the 23rd, the troughs lingered over the Cape York Peninsula, and produced showers and storms across the northern tropics, before contracting to the tip of the Cape York Peninsula by the 28th.
  • A number of sites had their highest April daily rainfall on record, or their highest total April rainfall on record. Some sites had their highest total April rainfall for at least 20 years.
  • For the northern wet season (October 2020 to April 2021) in Queensland, it was the wettest since 2018–19. Queensland had 4 tropical cyclones in its region for the season. Rainfall during the northern wet season was more variable across Queensland than other parts of northern Australia, and overall, Queensland had slightly below-average rainfall during the 2020–21 wet season.

Temperatures warmer in the north, but cooler than usual in the south

Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and flooding

  • On the 4th, heavy rainfall was recorded across the Cairns and Innisfail, with widespread totals of 150 mm to 220 mm in the 24 hours until 9am Monday the 5th.
  • On the 12th, golf ball sized hail was reported around Mona Park (near Ayr) as organised severe thunderstorms and an upper trough moved through the region.
  • Flooding occurred in catchments around Cairns from the 19th, which was the start of several consecutive days of 100 mm to 200 mm of rain at some sites and a 3-day total of 786 mm at Mt Sophia.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 7 am on Sunday 2 May 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
