Queensland in June 2021: wet in the west; warmer than usual days and nights in the north

Rainfall was above average in western Queensland, and in the southern inland, central interior and Capricornia coast. Below average rainfall was recorded in far northern and far south-eastern parts, while remaining areas were close to average.
Mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures were above average in northern Queensland, and close to the long-term average elsewhere.

Wet in the west, central and southern interior, and the Capricornia coast

  • June rainfall for Queensland as a whole was 53% above the long-term average, and the wettest June since 2016.
  • Rainfall was above average in parts of the southern and central interior, about the Capricornia coast and in western Queensland. Some areas of the North West, Central West and Channel Country districts in western Queensland were in decile 10 (top 10% of records).
  • Below average rainfall was recorded in far northern and far south-eastern Queensland, and close to long-term average rainfall elsewhere.
  • A surface and upper-level trough brought showers and moderate falls to the south-west on the 2nd and 3rd, then across the south-east quarter of the state on the 4th.
  • The passage of a cold front and surface trough produced widespread moderate falls over southern inland and south-eastern parts of Queensland on the 9th.
  • Onshore flow with showers and moderate falls were recorded about the Capricornia district on the 14th and 15th, and the Central Coast on the 16th. A surface trough triggered showers and thunderstorms over central Queensland the following day. Tarana Crossing had its highest June daily rainfall on record on the 17th.
  • A cold front and surface trough tracked into western Queensland on the 23rd, and produced moderate falls in the south-west on the 24th, then from north-west through central to southern inland Queensland on the 25th. Tanbar Station and South Galway in the Channel Country in far south-west Queensland had their highest June daily rainfall on record on the 24th.
  • As the cold front tracked eastwards, moderate falls were recorded from central Queensland to the Darling Downs, then the Capricornia and Wide Bay coasts on the 27th. Gladstone Radar had its wettest day this year on the 27th, with 55.6 mm. Typically, the wettest time of the year for the Capricornia Coast is from December to March.

Warm days and nights in the north

  • The June mean temperature was 1.08 °C above average.
  • The state's mean maximum temperature for June was 0.67 °C above average.
  • Maximum temperatures were above average across northern Queensland, and in decile 10 (the top 10% of records) in parts of the Cape York Peninsula and north-east tropical coast.
  • Maximum temperatures were close to average elsewhere, though Richmond had its highest June temperature on record on the 15th.
  • The mean minimum temperature for Queensland as a whole was 1.49 °C above average although lower than in June 2020.
  • Minimum temperatures were above average across the northern half of the state, and in parts of the south-west and southern interior. Cardwell Marine Pde had its warmest June night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record on the 16th.
  • Minimum temperatures were close to average elsewhere, though Hughenden had its lowest June temperature on record on the 10th.
  • For the year to date, the mean temperature was 0.61 °C above average, the state's mean maximum temperature was 0.52 °C above average, and the mean minimum (overnight) temperature was 0.69 °C above average.

Fog, flooding in western parts

  • Thick fog enveloped Brisbane on the morning of the 16th, with fog covering much of the eastern Queensland coastal fringe.
  • Following the passage of a cold front, moderate falls of 25 mm to 50 mm were recorded on the 24th across large parts of western Queensland, and produced flooding at South Galway Station (near Windorah) in the south-west.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Thursday 1 July 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
