Queensland in September 2021: wet in the north; warm nights away from the coast

Rainfall was above average in the north, and in south-west and southern inland districts. Below average rainfall was reported in pockets of the central west, south-east inland and Fraser coast, but was close to average elsewhere.
 
Mean maximum temperatures were warmer than usual in the west and most of the south. Mean minimum temperatures were warmer than usual in the north and west.

Wet in the north, south-west and southern interior

• Rainfall was above average in northern Queensland, and in south-west and southern inland districts; below average rainfall was reported in pockets of the central west, south-east inland and Fraser coast, and close to average elsewhere.
• It was a wet start to the month in the northern tropics, with a surface and upper level disturbance generating moderate to locally heavy falls around the north tropical coast on the 1st and moderate falls in the north-west on the 2nd. A few sites had their highest September daily rainfall on record.
• The passage of a cold front and surface trough saw showers and thunderstorms with moderate falls over the south-west on the 4th and the southern interior on the 5th. 
• At the end of the month, a surface trough and upper level disturbance over inland Queensland generated storms and moderate falls in the central and southern interior, then the south-east on the 30th. Severe thunderstorms also brought giant hail to parts of southern and south-east Queensland on the 30th, with 6 centimetre hail reported on the western Darling Downs.
• Some sites had their highest total September rainfall for at least 20 years.

Warm days in the west and most of the south

• Queensland's mean temperature was 1.46 °C above the 1961-1990 average.
• The mean maximum temperate was 1.27 °C above average, and the coolest since 2016.
• There were some cool days during the month due to high pressure systems bringing settled and dry weather, and a few sites had their coldest September day (lowest maximum temperature) on record during the month.
  
• The mean minimum temperature was 1.65 °C above average.
• Minimum temperatures were mixed throughout the month, with some warmer and cooler than usual nights during September, but a cold burst saw below average nights across most of the state from the 22nd to 24th.
• A cold night on the 22nd saw Middle Percy Island report its lowest September temperature on record.
