Queensland in November 2021: seventh-wettest November; wettest since 2010

For the state as a whole, it was the seventh-wettest November since records began in 1900 and the wettest November for Queensland since 2010. Areas of the Capricornia, Central Highlands, Wide Bay and Burnett, northern and southern Darling Downs and eastern parts of the Warrego and Maranoa had their wettest November on record.

Mean maximum temperatures were warmer than usual across the Cape York Peninsula, but cooler than usual across the rest of the state, especially in the west, southern interior and parts of the Darling Downs. Mean minimum temperatures were warmer than usual across the Cape York Peninsula, and along the east coast and adjacent inland districts.

Well above average rainfall, record high in some places

  • Rainfall for Queensland was 136% of the 1961-1990 average. It was the wettest November since 2010, and the seventh-wettest November on record for Queensland as a whole.
  • Above average rainfall was recorded across virtually the whole state.
  • Areas of the Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett, Central Highlands, northern and southern Darling Downs, and eastern parts of the Warrego and Maranoa districts had their wettest November on record. A number of sites had their highest total November rainfall on record or their highest total November rainfall for at least 20 years.
  • The highest monthly totals, in excess of 300 mm were reported in parts of the Capricornia coast, and the Wide Bay coast; totals in excess of 200 mm were widespread across large parts of eastern Queensland.
  • Rainfall deficiencies for the period commencing April 2020 have eased significantly over affected areas of western and eastern Queensland.
  • Inland surface troughs triggered showers and thunderstorms over western, central and southern inland parts of the state at the start of the month.
  • A low pressure system deepened over southern Queensland on the 7th, and resulted in widespread moderate falls over the south-eastern half of the state and the north-west on the 8th and 9th.
  • Moisture-laden troughs over the east and south on the 9th brought widespread falls, and extreme daily rainfall totals on the 10th with more than 150 mm around Byfield and over 340 mm at Samuel Hill Aero in the Capricornia District.
  • A cold front and low pressure system entered south-west Queensland on the 10th, with widespread moderate falls in western and southern Queensland as the front moved eastwwards.
  • Another low pressure system over southern inland Queensland on the 21st generated widespread moderate falls over southern parts. The low pressure system deepened and moved north-east over the Capricornia District on the 22nd, with the associated trough stretching west into the NT, and to tropical cyclone Paddy (named on the 22nd) in the Indian Ocean. Childers South reported more than 100 mm on the 23rd.
  • A trough situated near the south-east coast on the 23rd combined with moist onshore flow and brought moderate to locally heavy falls to areas of Greater Brisbane, with more than 120 mm recorded at the Brisbane site on the 24th.
  • A cold front, low pressure system and surface troughs tracked from western to eastern Queensland from the 24th to 27th, generating widespread moderate falls across virtually the whole state.
  • At the end of the month, another trough and low pressure system, combined with an upper-level disturbance over central to eastern Queensland, with the highest falls in excess of 100 mm reported through the central west.
  • Numerous sites had their highest November daily rainfall on record during the month.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Wednesday 1 December 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
