Queensland in January 2022: a wet start to the year in the west

Rainfall was above average in the west, the Channel Country, an area around Gympie in the Wide Bay and Burnett District, and about Cooktown in the far north tropical coast.

Mean maximum temperatures and mean minimum temperatures were both warmer than usual, with the warmest anomalies in central to south-western parts of the state.

A wet start to the year in the west

  • January rainfall was close to the long-term average, though geographically, parts of the south-west had more than twice their usual rainfall, while areas in eastern Queensland had less than half their average.
  • Rainfall was well above average in western and southern inland parts, and an area around Gympie in the Wide Bay and Burnett, and are area around the north tropical coast. Most of the Channel Country reported rainfall in decile 10 (the top 10% of historical records).
  • Rainfall was below average across the Central Highlands and Coalfields, the Central Coast, Capricornia and northern parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett districts, and across the far northern Cape York Peninsula.
  • At the start of the month, thunderstorms developed over the Darling Downs and Granite Belt, and Miles had its highest January daily rainfall on record on the 1st.
  • Extremely heavy rainfall associated with ex-tropical cyclone Seth saw Childers and Mount Joseph report their highest January daily rainfall on record on the 7th.
  • On the 24th, a monsoon through extended across the northern tropics and a surface trough stretched through western Queensland, with widespread showers and thunderstorms across the north and west. Mt Howitt had its highest January daily rainfall on record on the 25th, and  Hughenden had its highest January daily rainfall on record on the 26th. Townsville Aero had a 2-day rainfall total of 257 mm on the 27th.
  • A few sites had their highest total January rainfall for at least 20 years.

Warmer than usual nights across most of the state

  • The mean maximum, mean minimum and mean temperature for Queensland as a whole were all warmer than 2021, but cooler than 2020.
  • Queensland's mean temperature was 1.37 °C warmer than the 1961-1990 average.  The mean maximum temperature and mean minimum temperature was 1.40 °C and 1.33 °C above the 1961-1990 average, respectively.
  • Mean maximum temperatures were warmer than usual across the far north and parts of the Gulf Country, and a large area from the north tropical to Wide Bay and Burnett coast extending inland to south-west Queensland.
  • Mean minimum temperatures were warmer than usual across most of the state except along parts of eastern Queensland. The January mean minimum temperature was more than 2 °C above the 1961-1990 average in the south-west quarter of the state.
  • Some hot days occurred at the start of the month, with a warm air mass over most of the state resulting in areas from the west to the central coast being more than 6 °C above average, and some sites had their highest January temperature on record on the 4th.
  • On the 8th, Horn Island had its lowest January temperature on record.
  • A few sites had their warmest January night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.

Tropical cyclones, high tides and dangerous surf and coastal inundation

  • On 31 December 2021, Tropical Cyclone Seth was a Category 1 system that formed in the Coral Sea east north-east of Mackay. It remained off-shore, but generated hazardous surf and contributed to abnormally high tides along the Queensland and east coast of New South Wales.
  • Beaches on the Gold Coast beaches and on Stradbroke Island were closed from the 3rd, due to dangerous conditions caused by ex-tropical cyclone Seth. Bribie Island was split in two by high tides and dangerous surf conditions from ex-tropical cyclone Seth.
  • On the 4th, widespread and widely reported coastal flooding, from Noosa to Ballina, especially around Mooloolaba, Redcliffe Peninsula and Surfers Paradise. At Mooloolaba, the moderate flood level of 2.35 m was exceeded for ~100 minutes, with the minor level being exceeded for 3 hours. At Brisbane City, minor flood level was exceeded for ~100 minutes.
  • On the 9th, tropical cyclone Tiffany was a Category 2 system that crossed the coast near Cape Melville, with cyclone warnings extending across much of Cape York Peninsula as it tracked from east to west. On the 10th, the Coen River flooded following heavy rain from tropical cyclone Tiffany after it crossed the Queensland coast.

Heavy rainfall, flooding, and severe thunderstorms

  • On the 7th, extremely heavy rain fell around Gympie in the Wide Bay and Burnett region following landfall of ex-tropical cyclone Seth, with more than 400 mm recorded in Bureau gauges in the hills to the north-west of Gympie. Major flood warnings were in place for the Mary River at Miva and Tiaro on the 8th, and major at Maryborough on Sunday where flooding peaked at 9.96m on the night of the 9th, short of the 10.7 m peak reached in 2013.  On the 9th, moderate flood levels were reported on the Burnett River, as Saltwater Creek in the Bundaberg CBD overflowed onto Targo Street and parts of Bundaberg South were flooded.
  • On the 16th, severe thunderstorms occurred in the early hours of the morning, producing heavy rain and large quantities of hail to the Toowoomba region, damaging the roofs of some businesses. Hail mostly between 3 and 5 cm (but up to 7cm diameter), fell at Glenaven, near Crows Nest, during the afternoon.
  • The monsoon trough extended eastwards across north-west Queensland and into the Herbert and Lower Burdekin on the 25th, with heavy rainfall across the Townsville region on the 26th and 27th, resulting in flash flooding, with dozens of calls to the SES for assistance. Townsville Aero had a 2-day rainfall total of 257 mm on the 27th, the highest 2-day total since 4 February 2019.

Tsunami

  • On the 15th, the Bureau of Meteorology issued tsunami marine warnings for parts of Australia's east coast after an undersea volcanic explosion in Tonga.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Wednesday 2 February 2022. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
