Queensland in February 2022: record rain in the south-east but low totals for central and western parts

There was exceptional rainfall over south-east Queensland during the last week of February, but overall it was a drier than average month for the state. Temperatures were cooler than average in parts of the south and west, and warmer than average for much of the north and east.

Drier than average overall but wettest day and month for many sites in the south-east

  • February rainfall was 18% below average for Queensland overall, making it the driest February since 2017.
  • There was major flooding along the Georgina River during February following persistent rainfall over inland Australia during January and early February.
  • A large area stretching from the Lower Carpentaria district across to the East Central Coast district had below average rainfall, with patches in the driest 10% of February records.
  • A slow-moving middle and upper-level trough, combined with fresh and moist onshore winds and a surface trough, producing persistent heavy rainfall in south-east Queensland and north-east New South Wales at the end of the month.
  • Rainfall across parts of south-east Queensland for the 6-days ending 28 February was at least 2.5 times the 1961-1990 average February rainfall, with some parts recording more than 5 times the average.
  • It was the wettest February for much of south-east Queensland since national records began in 1900.
  • Many sites in south-east Queensland, including sites around Greater Brisbane had their highest February daily rainfall on record and their highest total February rainfall on record.
  • For other sites, it was their highest total February rainfall in at least 20 years.
  • A Special Climate Statement is being prepared and will provide more detail after the end of the ongoing rainfall and flooding event.

Warmer than average for parts of the north and east

  • Days were warmer than average for much of the east and north and in the warmest 10% of records around the Herbert North Coast district.
  • Days were cooler than average along the southern border and parts of the Lower Western district.
  • Even though the mean maximum temperature for Queensland was 0.36 °C warmer than average, it was still the coolest since 2014.
  • Nights were warmer than average around the Gulf of Carpentaria and parts of the peninsula but cooler than average in parts of the south-west and south-east.
  • Queensland's mean minimum temperature was 0.11 °C cooler than average and the lowest since 2013.
  • Some sites, mostly in the south-east, had their lowest February mean daily minimum temperature for at least 20 years.
  • A couple of sites with less than 30 years of record had their lowest February mean temperature on record and a few sites with longer records had their lowest February mean temperature for at least 20 years.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Tuesday 1 March 2022. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
