Remote Islands and Antarctica in January 2023

Australia's Indian Ocean islands

  • Christmas Island Aero recorded a monthly total of 156.6 mm, which was 54% of its average January rainfall; most of the monthly rainfall fell on the 1st and 24th, with the 68.4 mm on the 1st the highest daily rainfall total at this site in January since 23 January 2016.
  • The mean maximum temperature at Christmas Island Aero was above average, while the mean minimum temperature was equal to the January average.
  • The January rainfall total for Cocos Island Airport was 59% of its average.
  • Both mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures at Cocos Island Airport were below average.
  • Cocos Island Airport had its lowest January mean daily maximum temperature since 2001 and lowest January mean temperature since 1990.

Australia's Pacific Ocean islands

  • At Lord Howe Island Aero, the monthly rainfall total of 79.8 mm was three quarters of its January average; most of the monthly total was recorded in the 24 hours to 9 am on the 7th and was due to a low pressure trough that developed over the area.
  • At Norfolk Island Aero, the month was much wetter than average with the monthly rainfall total nearly double the January average as rain fell on most days during the month.
  • Both mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures were below average at Lord Howe Island Aero and close to average at Norfolk Island Aero.

Australia's Antarctic and sub-Antarctic territories

  • Total monthly wind run in January was above average at Davis and Mawson and close to average at Casey.
  • The strongest wind gust during the month was 128 km/h at Mawson on the 28th.
  • Mean maximum temperatures were below average at each of Australia's Antarctic stations.
  • Mean minimum temperatures were 1.2 °C and 1.0 °C below average at Davis and Mawson respectively, and equal to average at Casey.
  • Total monthly wind run was above average at Macquarie Island.
  • The strongest wind gust at Macquarie Island recorded this month was 106 km/h on the 27th.
  • At Macquarie Island, rainfall for January was 9% above average, with precipitation recorded on most days during the month.
  • Mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures were 0.9 °C and 1.0 °C above average respectively at Macquarie Island.
  • Macquarie Island had its highest January mean daily maximum temperature since 2002

Most values are the precipitation in the 24 hours to 9 am on the day indicated. Days marked with → are part of a longer accumulation, which is shown on the final day.
Values over 100 mm have been rounded to the nearest whole millimetre.
Days marked with - have a precipitation report of zero; days left blank have no precipitation report (which often indicates no precipitation fell).

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the third working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Remote Islands and Antarctica using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 3 pm on Thursday 2 February 2023. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the precipitation is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average precipitation.

The Rank indicates how precipitation this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low precipitation is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much precipitation has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
