Temperature
South Australia had a record warm month. The mean temperature (the average of the maximum and minimum temperatures) for South Australia as a whole in September 2013 was 4.3 °C above the long-term average and the highest anomaly for any month on record. Reflecting the warm conditions for the state as a whole, many individual sites around the state had their highest September mean temperature on record. The previous warmest September was observed in 2000, when mean the South Australian mean temperature was 2.5 °C above normal. By contrast, September 2012 was 1.4 °C above average. Mean temperatures across the State ranged from 12.9°C at Mount Lofty to 24.1°C at Oodnadatta Airport in the Far North.
Maximum temperature
Mean maximum temperatures over South Australia were highest on record across the state this September, with a state wide average 5.4 °C above normal for daytime temperatures. Several locations across northern parts of the agricultural districts and into the pastoral districts were in excess of 6.0°C above the long term September average. Southern parts of the Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas, central districts and the Murray Valley observed daytime temperature average between 2 to 5 °C above normal.
The warmest period for much of the state occurred at the beginning of the month in the northerly air stream ahead of the strong cold front. Much of the State observed maximum temperatures well above average with several locations observing highest September maximums so early in the month. The warmest day for any location was recorded was at Oodnadatta Airport, reaching 39.6°C on the 30th, the warmest September day at this location in 6 years.
Earlier in the month, on the 10th, Mount Lofty recorded the coldest day for any location when its maximum temperature reached just 9.2°C.
Average daily maximum temperatures ranged from 16.5 °C at Mount Lofty to 32.9 °C at Oodnadatta Airport in the Northeast district, resulting the warmest September at this site since 2003.
Arkaroola had its highest September temperature on record while many other sites had their highest September mean daily maximum temperature on record, or their highest September mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years.
Minimum temperature
Mean minimum temperatures over South Australia were very much above average across the entire State as a whole this September. Nights, across the state as a whole, were 3.2 °C above the normal resulting in the highest on record.
The warmest nights for many locations occurred at the start of the month in the warm north-westerly air-stream ahead of an approaching weak cold frontal system. Though, a warm spell at the end of the month saw Tarcoola Aero report the warmest night for any location on the 30th with a minimum of 24.5°C, while both Woomera and Whyalla observed a record warmest September overnight minimum with 23.2 °C and 22.2 °C respectively. Some sites had their warmest September night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record, on either the 4th or 30th.
The warmest nights on average were observed at Oodnadatta with 15.4 °C, while the coolest nights on average were observed at Yongala with 5.2°C.
The coldest night for any location around the State was observed at Yongala where the temperature fell to -1.0 °C on the 27th.
Many sites had their highest September mean daily minimum temperature on record.Rainfall
Most locations in South Australia received average to below average rainfall throughout September, apart from far western parts of the State and the southern tip of Eyre Peninsula where rainfall was above average,. The wettest period for much of the State occurred between the 13th and 20th as a deep low pressure system that tracked eastwards across southern ocean waters extended a series of troughs across southern parts of the State. The passage of a low pressure trough on the 13th brought rainfall totals in excess of 20 mm for central and southern districts. Some sites had their highest September daily rainfall on record. Despite this, most of South Australia remained relatively dry throughout the month.
Pastoral Districts
Rainfall totals over the pastoral districts were mostly below average, tending to very much below average across Northwest and northern parts of the pastorals. Rainfall totals were typically between 1 and 5mm, though several locations across northern pastoral areas reported no rainfall through the month.
The wettest period for the pastoral districts was on the 13th as a cloud band and trough of low pressure which produced showers and isolated thunderstorms. The wettest overall throughout the pastorals was at Yardea in the Northwest district with 20.2 mm for the month.
Agricultural Districts
Average to below average rainfall was observed across the agricultural districts with some parts in the western agricultural areas seeing very much below average rainfall for the month.
Totals were in the range of 25 to 50 mm for most locations, but up to 100mm across the Mount Lofty Ranges and the lower southeast districts of the State. The wettest overall for the month in the agricultural districts was Uraidla Forest in the Mount Lofty Ranges with 122.6 mm.
Some sites in the north of the state had their lowest total September rainfall on record. Some sites had their lowest total September rainfall for at least 20 years.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in South Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Tuesday 1 October 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
