South Australia in January 2014: Records tumble in heatwaves

  • Extended periods of very hot conditions, particularly mid-month produce records at many locations.
  • Well above average temperatures result in the 8th hottest January on record for South Australia.
  • Below average rainfall in the north-east, tending wetter than average in the west and south of the state.

Rainfall

Averaged across South Australia as a whole, rainfall was 55% of the average for January. Much of the rain fell either on the 2nd and 3rd, or in the last week of the month, with conditions remaining dry for much of the month for most locations.

Rainfall was average tending above average across parts of the southern and western agricultural districts, while the northeast pastoral and some eastern districts saw rainfall tending below average for the month. Overall, rainfall totals were below average for over 50% of the State with several sites across the northeast pastoral districts had their lowest total January rainfall on record.

The wettest single day was at Naracoorte Aerodrome with 31.8 mm on 2nd. While the wettest overall for the month was at Nullabor with 42.6mm.

Some sites in the pastoral districts had no rainfall for the month and hence their equal lowest total January rainfall on record.

Temperature

The month started with hot conditions, before a brief mild spell. During the second week heat in the interior began building producing widespread heatwave conditions across the state from the 12th to the 18th. Many sites had record hottest days, and record runs of very hot days. A moderate cold frontal system decreased temperatures in the third week, before another run of slightly less intense heat in the last days of the month.

The mean temperature (the average of the maximum and minimum temperatures) for South Australia as a whole in January 2014 was 2.2 °C above the long-term average. By contrast, January 2013 was 1.9 °C above average.

Maximum temperature

Mean maximum temperatures were well above average across South Australia with record hottest January daytime temperatures at locations on the Yorke Peninsula and across the southeast of the State.

Daytime temperatures for the month were typically 2 to 3 °C above average, and ranged from 23.1 °C at Cape Willoughby on Kangaroo Island to 41.2 °C at Marree in the Far North. Edithburgh on Yorke Peninsula recorded its hottest January daytime temperature on record.

The warmest period occurred during 12th to 18th due to northerly winds around a high pressure system centred over the Tasman Sea. Maximum temperatures were in excess of 10 °C above average across most of the agricultural parts of the State through that period.

The warmest day for any location was recorded at Moomba Airport reaching 49.3 °C on the 2nd , the 2nd hottest day ever recorded at that site, and the 5th hottest temperature ever officially recorded in South Australia.

Coober Pedy, Tarcoola, Elliston, Neptune Island, Stenhouse Bay, Cape Willoughby, Mount Lofty, Keith, Mount Gambier and Naracoorte all had hottest days on record for any month, these new records mainly occurred under heatwave conditions between the 14th or 16th of the month. See sites with their highest January temperature on record.

Many sites also had record runs of very hot days, including Adelaide, Renmark and Roseworthy recording 5 consecutive days of 42 °C or more, Port Augusta recorded 5 days of 45 °C or more. For further information on heatwave events please see the relevant Special Climate Statements.

On the 5th Mount Lofty recorded the coldest day for any location when its maximum temperature reached 14.1 °C. Despite the widespread heat across the State at the beginning of January, Keith in the lower southeast district observed its coldest January day (lowest maximum temperature) on record on the 2nd.

Minimum temperature

As with daytime temperatures, night-time temperatures were well above average for the month, typically by 1 to 2 °C. The hottest nights occurred at Oodnadatta where minimum temperatures averaged 25.0 °C while the coldest was at Naracoorte which recorded average minimum temperatures of 12.1 °C.

Cleve had a record run of 2 nights in a row with minimum temperatures of 30 °C or more, while several sites had record runs of night where minimum temperatures were 25 °C or more, including 4 consecutive such nights at Maitland and Strathalbyn.

The hottest night was at Moomba where the minimum temperature was 31.6 °C on the 19th; Keith had the coldest night with the temperature dropping to 4.6 °C on the 7th.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in South Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Monday 3 February 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
