Adelaide in December 2016: Heavy rain and above average temperatures
It was a wet finish to 2016 for Adelaide in December, with heavy rainfall reported between the 8th and 9th, and particularly heavy rainfall leading to localised flash flooding between the 27th and 29th across the Adelaide metropolitan and Hills region. Both day and night temperatures started off cooler than average at the beginning of December, but the last few days saw well above average temperatures.
Heavy rainfall leads to very wet month
- Heavy rainfall was reported between the 8th and 9th and between the 27th and 29th across the Adelaide metropolitan and Hills region with several locations reporting their wettest December day on record in the latter period
- In the 24 hours to 9am on the 28th, 110.0 mm of rainfall was recorded at Uraidla, in the Adelaide Hills, marking the sixth-highest December daily rainfall total on record for the Adelaide region
- With the monthly total rainfall up to three times the long term average across the region, several sites reported their wettest December in several decades
- With a monthly total of 86.8 mm for the city, it was the sixth-wettest December to be recorded in Adelaide since records began in 1839
- Adelaide received 61.2mm on 28th; the third-highest December daily rainfall for the city (comparing observations from both Kent Town and West Terrace)
A cooler than average start and then a warmer than average finish
- The month started with cooler than average temperatures for both maximum and minimum temperatures, but finished with well above average temperatures
- With heatwave conditions experienced at the end of the month, daytime temperatures were in excess of 12 °C warmer than average around the Christmas period
Damaging winds and flash flooding
- A deep low pressure system brought record high humidity, heavy rainfall and destructive winds on the 27th-28th, with flash flooding occurring through the Mount Lofty Ranges and Adelaide Metropolitan area
- A wind gust of 120 km/h was recorded in the early morning at Mount Crawford on the 28th

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Adelaide using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Tuesday 3 January 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
