Monday, 2 December 2019 - Monthly Climate Summary for South Australia - Product code IDCKGC13R0
South Australia in November 2019: dry in the north and west, some cold nights
Rainfall in November was near-average over much of eastern South Australia, but there were large areas that had below average rainfall, particularly in the State's west. Daytime temperatures for November were warmer than average in the west and close to average elsewhere as numerous cool days were offset by a few very hot days. Night-time temperatures were generally cooler than average, with some areas having very much below average minimum temperatures for the month.
Driest November since 1990
- Rainfall in November was near-average over much of eastern South Australia, but there were large areas of below average rainfall, particularly in the west
- For South Australia as a whole, monthly rainfall was 69% below average, the lowest November total since 1990
- The highest monthly totals were in the Lower South East, with several sites recording more than 50 mm, including 70.0 mm at Nangwarry
- The Pastoral districts generally recorded less than 10 mm and Andamooka recorded no rain for the month
- The State's wettest day was on the 2nd, with light to moderate falls over central and eastern areas of the State and 22.4 mm at Meribah (Merallen) the highest recorded daily total
- A few days later on the 5th, a localised hail storm damaged crops in the Riverland and covered the ground in white
- Very little rain fell across the State for two weeks through the middle of the month, during a period that included some hot days and dangerous fire weather conditions
- Yunta Airstrip (2.0 mm) and Coober Pedy Airport (0.8 mm) had their lowest total November rainfall on record, although the old Yunta site had 0.0 mm in 1990 and the old Coober Pedy site had 0.0 mm in 2016
- Several sites had their lowest total November rainfall for at least 20 years
- Year-to-date rainfall is below average to very much below average across South Australia, making it the State's driest January to November period on record, with very much above rainfall in December needed to avoid 2019 being the State's driest year on record
Coolest nights since 1992
- Daytime temperatures were below average on many days during the month, but several bursts of heat brought the overall monthly mean maximum temperature up close to average for many areas of eastern South Australia
- Mean maximum temperatures were above average in the west and a small area of cooler than average in the Lower South East
- On the 20th, strong northerly winds saw temperatures rise more than 16 °C above average over southern South Australia and several sites had their highest November temperature on record
- The mean maximum temperature for South Australia was 0.75 °C warmer than average for November
- The month began with a very warm night, particularly in the east, with minimum temperatures more then 10 °C above average in the South East districts on 1 November
- Another warm night on the 21st saw some sites having their warmest November night on record
- Despite a few warm nights though, night-time temperatures were generally cooler than average during November, with many areas having below to very much below average mean minimum temperatures for the month
- The mean minimum temperature was 0.99 °C cooler than average for November, the lowest since 1992
- Numerous sites had either their lowest November mean daily minimum temperature on record or their lowest November mean daily minimum temperature for at least 20 years
- For overall mean temperature, some sites had their lowest November mean temperature for at least 20 years
- Year-to-date mean maximum temperatures are very much above average across most of South Australia, including large areas of warmest on record for the January to November period
- Year-to-date mean minimum temperatures are near average to warmer than average across most of the State

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in South Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 2 December 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
