South Australia in June 2021: wettest since 2016

Rainfall was above average for most of the southern Agricultural districts, but closer to average in the Lower South East. For South Australia as a whole, it was the wettest June since 2016. Daytime temperatures were generally close to average or warmer than average in the state's east, but were cooler than average in the west, particularly in the West Coast district. Night-time temperatures were above to very much above average in central and eastern Agricultural districts but were cooler than average in state's north-west.

Wettest June since 2016

  • Rainfall was above average along most of South Australia's southern coastline, with rainfall close to average for the Lower South East.
  • Rainfall was below average for parts of the Riverland and Murraylands districts. It was also drier than average in central parts of the Northeast Pastoral district, which had less than 10 mm for the month. But elsewhere, totals were close to average or above average during June.
  • For South Australia as a whole, June rainfall was 21% above average, the highest since 2016.
  • On the 7th, strong north to north-westerly winds ahead of a cold front resulted in areas of raised dust observed on the Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Mid North district, and around Adelaide.
  • The following day on the 8th, hail and sleet fell at Mount Lofty as a vigorous cold front crossed south-eastern Australia, with snow flurries on the Heysen Trail at Hallett Hut and at Mount Bryan in the state's Mid North.
  • On the 17th, a cold front crossed the state, bringing widespread falls of 10 to 50 mm across central districts.
  • In the 24 hours to 9am on the 18th, a few sites had their highest June daily rainfall on record.
  • On the 24th, a low pressure system brought strong winds, rain, and abnormally high tides to the Adelaide region, with trees brought down in the Adelaide Hills.
  • Two sites, each with less than 30 years of data, had their highest total June rainfall on record and several more had their highest total June rainfall for at least 20 years.
  • Year-to-date rainfall has been below average in the east, particularly in the Riverland and Murraylands districts, but close to average or above average elsewhere. For South Australia as a whole, rainfall for the first 6 months of the year has been 11% below average.

Cool in the west, warmer in the east

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in South Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Thursday 1 July 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
