South Australia in November 2021: wettest on record
November rainfall was the highest on record for South Australia as a whole. However, parts of the south-east were drier than average. Daytime temperatures were much cooler than average due to cloud cover and the record rainfall. Night-time temperatures were close to average for November across most of the state.
Wettest November on record going back to 1900
- State-wide, November rainfall was the highest on record and 288% above average.
- The area averaged rainfall in November 2021 was more than 2 mm above the previous record of 56.92 mm in 1920.
- Some stations had their highest November daily rainfall on record on the 11th or 12th when a complex low pressure system over central South Australia resulted in showers, rain and isolated thunderstorms across the state.
- Many stations across the west and extending into southern central South Australia had their highest total November rainfall on record, and for many others it was their highest total November rainfall for at least 20 years.
- Towards the end of the month, a low pressure system brought widespread rain and showers that resulted high river levels, flood waters and ponding in low lying areas, and many roads were closed across South Australia's pastoral districts.
- Rainfall was below average in the Lower Southeast district.
Ninth coolest November days on record
- Due to cloud cover and the record rainfall, daytime temperatures were very much cooler than average (in the bottom 10% of records) for most of the state, away from the south-east.
- The mean maximum temperature for South Australia as a whole was 2.41 °C cooler than average, making it the ninth-coolest November days on record.
- The mean minimum temperature for South Australia was very close to average (0.02 °C below average).
- Night-time temperatures were lower than average in parts of the north and north-west and close to average in most other areas.
- Many sites had their coldest November day on record on the 11th when maximum temperatures were more than 12 °C below average for most of the state.
- Some sites had their lowest November mean daily maximum temperature on record, and for more it was their lowest November mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years.
- On the 13th, daily minimum temperatures were more than 6 °C colder than average over much of central Australia and Ernabella (Pukatja), in the state's far north, had its lowest November temperature on record.

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in South Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 7 am on Friday 3 December 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
