South Australia in June 2022: drier than average for parts of the north

Much of south-eastern South Australia had near average June rainfall, however, parts of the Northern Agricultural Areas extending into the North West Pastoral and North East Pastoral districts were drier than average. Maximum temperatures were close to average for most of the state, tending to above average along the western border and northern parts of the North West Pastoral district. Minimum temperatures were in warmest 10% of all years since 1910 for parts of the south-east.

Average to below average rainfall for most of the state

  • Overall, South Australia's rainfall was 26% below average (1961-1990) for June.
  • Rainfall was close to average for most parts, tending to below average across the Northern Agricultural Areas extending into the North West Pastoral and North East Pastoral districts.
  • June rainfall was higher than average for parts of the northern border.
  • Some sites had their highest June daily rainfall on record on the 5th — including Uraidla and Glen Osmond with over 120 years of record — when a cold front crossing the south of the state brought heavy rainfall, flash flooding and damaging winds.
  • A few sites with relatively short historical records had their highest total June rainfall on record.
  • Glen Osmond had its highest total June rainfall since 1981.

Mild nights in the south-east

  • Mean maximum temperatures were close to average for most of the State, tending to warmer than average in the west and cooler than average in the east.
  • Minimum temperatures were very much above average (warmest 10% of all years since 1910) for parts of the Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges, Yorke Peninsula, Mid North, Murraylands and Riverland districts, and above average for adjacent areas of the south-east, and north-western parts of the North West Pastoral district.
  • In contrast, mean minimum temperatures were very much lower than average for parts of the North East Pastoral district.
  • The mean maximum temperature for South Australia as a whole was 0.07 °C cooler than the 1961–1990 average and the coolest June since 2016.
  • Despite some cold mornings at times, South Australia's mean minimum temperature was 0.39 °C higher than the 1961–1990 average.
  • Adelaide Airport had its highest June mean daily minimum temperature since 1991, and Nurioopta had its equal highest June mean daily minimum temperature on record.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, usually published in the first week of the following month, lists the main features of the weather in South Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Tuesday 5 July 2022. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.

Information about Australian Indigenous seasonal calendars is available at the Indigenous Weather Knowledge website.
