South Australia in December 2022: mixed rainfall and close to average temperatures for most areas

Rainfall was below average for December in parts of the south and west, but above average for parts of the north. Mean temperatures were typical for December in most parts, with some areas of warmer than average in the west and cooler than average in the east.

Drier than average for the state overall

  • The month started with a mostly dry week, and most of the monthly rainfall was recorded in the second half of December.
  • Rainfall for December was 7% below average for South Australia as a whole.
  • Parts of the Southern Agricultural Areas had below average rainfall while parts of the Northern Agricultural Areas had above average rainfall.
  • Rainfall was above average for much of the North East Pastoral district and southern parts of the North West Pastoral district.
  • A low pressure trough extending across northern and central Australia brought strong winds across central Australia on the 19th with maximum wind gusts of 87 km/h at Roxby Downs, 74 km/h at Woomera Aerodrome and 81 km/h at Minlaton Aero.

Close to average temperatures for most

  • The mean maximum temperature for South Australia as a whole was 0.22 °C warmer than average (1961-1990), but not as warm as December 2021 (+1.02 °C).
  • A low and trough over Western Australia pushing into the far north-west of South Australia saw maximum temperatures more than 12 °C cooler than average in the north-west on the 16th.
  • Hot conditions towards the end of the month saw maximum temperatures more than 12 °C above average for parts of the south from the 25th to the 27th.
  • Minimum temperatures were more than 12 °C warmer than average for parts of the Eyre Peninsula on the 27th.
  • The mean minimum temperature for South Australia as a whole was 0.34 °C warmer than average (1961-1990), similar to December 2021 (+0.35 °C).
  • A few sites in the Agricultural Areas with relatively short historical records had their lowest December temperature.
  • Keith had its lowest December mean daily minimum and its lowest December mean temperature since 2001.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, usually published in the first week of the following month, lists the main features of the weather in South Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 3 January 2023. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.

Information about Australian Indigenous seasonal calendars is available at the Indigenous Weather Knowledge website.
