Mild days predominate
It was unseasonably warm at the start of September, with temperatures in the low to mid-20s reported at several sites across Tasmania. Dover and Geeveston reached 24.8 °C on the 1st, and several other sites had their warmest day in the first few days of the month. There was over a week of cold weather around the middle of the month, with daytime temperatures hovering in the low teens and some snow down to low levels on the 11th and 12th. This gave way to further mild days at the end of the month. Overall, daytime temperatures were above average for the month, typically by about half to one degree. In general September in Tasmania was warmer than 2012, but not as warm as 2001.
Record cold temperature, but nights mild overall
After the mild start, a burst of cold weather from the 11th to the 14th saw some very low temperatures. Liawenee dropped to -8.8 °C on the morning of the 13th, and a few sites registered their lowest September temperature on record on either the 12th or 13th. There were many more mild nights than cold ones, and the mean daily minimum temperature was over a degree above average across the state. For most sites it was their highest mean daily minimum temperature since at least 2001, and a few (including Launceston) had their highest September mean daily minimum temperature on record.
Some wet days
There were several wet days in different parts of Tasmania during September, especially from the 9th to the 11th and again from the 17th to the 19th. The wettest single day was at Gray (Dalmayne Rd) with 114.0 mm in the 24 hours to 9 am on the 18th. Following the wet August this rain brought some moderate flooding to the upper South Esk River, and some minor flooding in the North Esk.
The western half of the state saw rain on most days, with some moderate to heavy falls. This ensured the wettest confirmed total was 351.8 mm at Lake Margaret Power Station (nearby Mount Read had at least 443 mm but was affected by snow and its true total is not known).
Most sites had more rain than usual during September, although only in patches was it markedly higher than the long-term average.
Windy spring weather
Strong and gusty winds are a common feature of spring in Tasmania, and September 2013 was no exception. On the 26th Hogan Island (in Bass Strait) reported gusts to 161 km/h, Cape Grim (in the northwest) 141 km/h and Flinders Island Airport 120 km/h. The windy weather continued to the end of the month, with Mount Wellington reporting gusts to 120 km/h late on the 29th and Hobart gusting to 81 km/h early on the 30th.
A mild September in Hobart
Despite some cold weather in the middle of the month, Hobart had a very mild September. The mean daily minimum temperature was the warmest it had been since 1988, and at 8.2 ° was 1.8 °C above the long-term average. There were 11 nights when the temperature did not drop below 10 °C in Hobart, the greatest number of such mild September nights recorded and well above the long-term average of about 3 nights. The lowest temperature was a chilly 0.6 °C on the morning of the 13th.
In common with several other places in Tasmania, Hobart's warmest day was on the 1st, when it reached 23.4 °C in the city. Hobart exceeded 20 °C on 9 days, the first time there have been so many such mild days recorded in September. At the other extreme, Hobart managed only 10.1 °C on the 11th and 10.6 °C on the 13th. Overall, the daily maximum temperature averaged to 16.7 °C (1.6 °C above the long-term average).
There were 17 days with at least some rain in Hobart during September, a little above the long-term average of 15 rainy days. Most of these saw only slight falls, and the 40.0 mm total for the month is below the average of 53 mm. East of the city, Hobart Airport recorded only 24 mm for the whole month, against a long-term average of 42 mm.
Strong and gusty winds occurred several times during the month, with gusts over 70 km/h recorded in the city on 6 days, reaching a peak of 81 km/h early on the 30th. These values are fairly typical for the time of year.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 October 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
