Tasmania in November 2013: heavy rain and cool days
With three low pressure systems close to the state at different times during November, heavy rain and cool, cloudy days were recurrent features in Tasmania, especially in the east.
- Three heavy rain events
- Wet in the east, but relatively dry in the west
- Many cool days
- Less westerlies than recent months, but more easterlies
A summary has also been prepared covering all of spring 2013. The 2013 Annual Climate Summary for Tasmania will be published on Friday 3 January 2014.

Three heavy rain events
Tasmania was affected by low pressure systems close to the state an unusual three times during November, with heavy rain the result each time. A low moved southwards to the east of the state on the 8th and 9th, bringing rain across the state and totals over 50 mm in some areas. On the 12th and 13th, a low that had moved down the NSW coast low brought very high totals to the upper East Coast, with Gray (Haven of Hope) recording 258.0 mm in the 24 hours to 9 am on the 13th (the 2nd-wettest November day ever recorded in Tasmania). From the 21st to the 24th the state was influenced by a complex low near the state which again saw totals over 50 mm in the east (and over 100 mm in some places). A few sites set new November daily rainfall records during one or other of these events.
With the rain mostly coming when the wind was from the east, the west coast and highlands had a relatively dry November. This was quite unlike the wet weather experienced from July to October, where persistent westerly winds and cold fronts brought rain especially to the west and northwest. The area around Bridport was also a little drier than usual, as it missed out on the big falls from the three lows. Nonetheless, some sites in the east and north had their highest total November rainfall on record or their highest for many years.
Many cool days
With frequent east to southeast winds, cool days were dominant in Tasmania through November, especially in the southeast. Orford had 9 days below 15 °C, triple the normal number of such cool days in November, whilst Tunnack had 5 days below 10 °C. Mean maximum temperatures were below average across the state, typically by about one degree but by over two degrees at some sites in the southeast. A handful of sites had their lowest mean daily maximum for many years.
The 8th brought particularly cold weather, with Launceston, Wynyard, Devonport and Ross having their coldest November day on record. Launceston Airport reached just 9.7 °C on the 8th, the first November day below 10 °C at either the present or previous site (where observations go back to 1939). There was some warm weather, with the hottest day on the 6th when Hobart (Ellerslie Road) reached 29.5 °C and several sites reached into the mid-20s.
A mixed result for minima
The cloudy, rainy weather prevented nights from getting too cold for most of the month, but there were also few especially warm nights. Several cold mornings in the first half of the month (the coldest was at Liawenee with -4.4 °C on the 5th) were balanced by warm nights toward the end. Overall, mean minimum temperatures were mostly close to the November normal.
Hobart
Hobart, typical of places in the southeast of Tasmania, had more cool days than usual for November: there were 9 days below 15 °C (the same number as in October and well above the November average of 5 days), and on the 8th it reached only 10.6 °C. Even though it reached 29.5 °C on the 6th, Hobart's mean daily maximum of 16.9 °C was 1.8 °C below normal. Nights were more varied, and the mean daily minimum of 9.6 °C was 0.3 °C above normal.
The 94.0 mm for the month was well above the long-term November average of 54.4 mm, and much wetter than the 24.8 mm from November 2012.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 2 December 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
