Tasmania in June 2015: a mostly cool month, dry in the north
Cool weather was dominant in Tasmania during June 2015, with snow to low levels early in the month and several frosty mornings. Rain was average in the south, but below average in the north.
- A cool month overall
- Several cold and frosty nights
- A few mild days and nights
- Rainfall below average, especially in the northwest
- Strong winds on the 8th and 9th
Temperatures were below average for most of June, with some very cool days and several cold and frosty nights. Most sites had mean maximum temperatures between half and one degree below the June average. Mean minimum temperatures were a little below average for most of the north, but a little above average for most of the south. Days were particularly cold at the start of the month (Ross had its coldest June day on the 4th), around the 9th, and from the 14th to the 21st. There were several stretches of cold nights, notably at the start of the month and from the 19th to the 22nd (Wynyard recorded its lowest June temperature on the 21st). There was also some warmer weather, notably on the 7th and in the final week of the month.
Rainfall was below the June average in northern Tasmania, and particularly low in the far northwest and on Flinders Island. Totals were close to average in the south and on the western highlands. Frequent westerly winds ensured the western highlands had rain on most days, but in the north totals were mostly light: for example King Island Airport had 26 rainy days but its total of 49 mm was only half its June average.
A marked cold front crossed late on the 7th. Temperatures ahead of the front were very mild (Butlers Gorge had its mildest June morning, Campania reached 20 °C, and Hobart Airport had its warmest June day on the 7th). After the front, there was snow to low levels accompanied by strong and gusty winds, especially on the 8th and 9th when many sites reported gusts well in excess of 100 km/h. On the afternoon of the 8th, Maatsuyker Island had a gust to 185 km/h, a new Australian record June wind gust. Strahan, Devonport and Larapuna were among the sites that had their strongest June gust on record (although most stations have less than 20 years of such observations).

Notes
The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Wednesday 1 July 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
