Tasmania in November 2015: mostly warm and mostly dry

November rainfall was below average for almost all of Tasmania, apart from in the northeast. Temperatures were warmer than usual for November both by day and by night, with a few cool days more than countered by several very warm days. A cold outbreak near the end of the month brought strong winds and a sharp drop in temperatures..

  • Rain below average in the western half
  • Localised heavy rain on the northern East Coast
  • Mostly warm days and nights
  • Strong and windy cold change overnight on the 25th

Rainfall was again below average for most of Tasmania. Around the 6th and 13th, significant rain fell from low pressures systems to the northeast of the State, including 101 mm in 24 hours at Douglas River. However, the heaviest rain was confined to a relatively small area and dry conditions dominated for most of the month. The final week of the month saw cold fronts and a westerly stream that gave localised moderate falls to the western half of the State, but not enough to raise monthly totals to near normal there. The statewide mean rainfall was 31% below average. The generally below-average rain for November follows a very dry October and a generally dry September, to produce a record dry spring.

Daytime maximum temperatures were above average on almost every day. Temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s were seen on the 1st, 9th and 19th, particularly in the east and southeast. Cool days occurred on the 2nd, 3rd and 26th in the wake of cold fronts. Mount Read did not get above freezing on the 26th, the latest in the year that such a cold day has been reported from there. Overall, mean maximum temperatures were above average at most sites, typically by about a degree, with a few sites in the west having cooler-than-average days,. The statewide mean maximum temperature was 1.05 °C above average.

Overnight minimum temperatures were also mostly above average, despite several very chilly mornings on the 3rd, 4th and 15th (with Hobart Airport having its coldest November temperature on the morning on the 4th). Nights were persistently mild from the 17th to the 25th. Mean minimum temperatures for the month were above average in all areas, typically by around one degree and mostly in the top 10% of historical records. The statewide mean minimum temperature was 0.66 °C above average.

Strong and damaging winds occurred as a cold front crossed the State on the 25th and into the 26th, with a number of sites in the south reporting wind gusts well in excess of 100 km/h. Temperatures dipped markedly after the change, with snow falling down to about 800 metres.

Hobart's mean daily maximum temperature of 20.5 °C was 1.8 °C above the November average and more typical of the long-term average for December. It included a day of 32.5 °C on the 9th, but also three days below 14 °C. The city's mean minimum temperature of 10.8 °C was 1.5 °C above the November average, even though it dipped to 4.9 °C on the morning of the 3rd. Hobart's rainfall for the month was 40.4 mm, about 14 mm below the November average.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 December 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
