Monday, 2 May 2016 - Monthly Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC17R0
Tasmania in April 2016: another warm month, and very dry in the east
April saw a continuation of unseasonably warm temperatures in Tasmania, with some sites having their warmest April on record. Rainfall was well below average in the east of the State, but closer to average in parts of the west.
- Very warm days
- Record warm mean maximum for Hobart
- Mostly mild nights
- Dry for most areas
Rainfall during April was very much below average over much of Tasmania, with some sites having their driest April on record. Many other sites had their driest April for several decades; along the northwest coast, some sites had their driest April since 1963. Some active cold fronts brought significant rain to the western highlands – Mount Read had 389.4 mm for the month – but often little if any rain reached the east, or even the northwest coast. Rainfall has been below average in most areas of Tasmania since at least June 2015, and in parts of the west total rain for those 10 months is the lowest on record.
Daytime temperatures were above the April average for most of the month, with very few cold days. Even though there were no especially hot days several sites in the east (including Hobart) had their highest April mean daily maximum temperature on record. Overall, temperatures were about one or two degrees above average for April, making them more typical of late summer than mid-autumn. The highest temperature was 27.1 °C at Friendly Beaches on the 20th, which is quite late in autumn for Tasmania to get such a warm day. Overnight temperatures were also above average, typically by about half to one degree, although cool mornings were common from the 17th to 25th. Mean monthly temperatures have mostly been above average in Tasmania since August 2015.
Hobart
Hobart's mean daily maximum temperature was a record for April at 20.4 °C, more than three degrees above the long-term average. There were three days over 25 °C (including the 26th); typically the city records only about one day each April that warm. The mean minimum temperature of 10.8 °C was about 1.8 °C above average. There was just 8.8 mm of rain in the city during the month, well down on the April average of about 51 mm.

Notes
The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 2 May 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
