Rainfall
A continuous succession of cold fronts passed across the Victorian region during August, resulting in above average rainfall state-wide. Over half the State recorded rainfall in the highest 10% of previous totals, with some locations in the Western district, specifically Weeaproinah, Cape Otway Lighthouse and Apollo Bay, all highest on record.
In fact, Weeaproinah experienced not only their wettest August on record, but also their wettest month on record, with a 628 mm soaking. This equates to almost one third of the usual annual rainfall at Weeaproinah and is more than double the average for August. Numerous locations across the State recorded rainfall of more than twice the average for August, particularly in the Western district and Northern Country.
Significant frontal systems passed across the State, bringing widespread rain and strong winds. A particularly strong low pressure system centred in Bass Strait on the 11th, progressed across the State in the late afternoon through to evening, causing widespread precipitation. This system was associated with the highest daily rainfall for the month with Weeaproinah recording 110.0 mm on the 12th. Substantial snowfalls in Alpine areas were recorded between the 24th and 27th, with snow reported down to low levels.
Temperature
Maximum temperature
Chilly days were experienced throughout Victoria with average maximum temperatures approximately 1.5°C lower than that usually experienced in August. Frequent cloud cover associated with frontal systems prevented daytime heating of the atmosphere, which led to cool daytime temperatures, often remaining below 12°C. In fact, several locations, including Strathbogie and Noojee, observed record low average daytime temperatures for the month.
The Alpine areas experienced icy days throughout August, Mount Hotham the coldest location this month, averaging just -1.3°C. The 25th was the coldest day with Mount Hotham also recording the coldest maximum temperature, -4.7°C and Mount Buller equalling its previous record coldest August day, reaching just -3.5°C.
In contrast, the warmest days on average were observed at Mildura Airport, a mild 15.7°C. More than half the State observed the warmest day on the 30th where sunny spring-like conditions raised temperatures over 18°C. Yet surprisingly, the warmest days of the month were the 19th, with a pleasant 21.4°C recorded at Gabo Island Lighthouse; whilst Mildura Airport reached 21.5°C on the 31st.
Minimum temperature
Minimum temperatures were slightly below average this month, with persistent cloud cover moderating overnight cooling. The coolest nights across the State were the 7th, 8th and 25th, with particularly frosty conditions in the north and west recorded on the 17th. Across the south and east of the State, including the Alpine areas, freezing sub-zero overnight temperatures were recorded on the 25th, with Mount Hotham observing a very icy -7.6°C.
The lighthouse stations experienced the warmest overnight temperatures again this month, averaging 8.4°C at Cape Nelson Lighthouse and Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse, which was, surprisingly, even warmer than the average at the Melbourne Regional Office (7.6°C).

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Wednesday 1 September 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
