Victoria in August 2012: Mostly normal

August 2012 in Victoria was characterised by:

  • Near average rainfall (drier in the northwest, wetter in the far east)
  • Mostly close to normal daytime temperatures
  • Cooler than normal night-times in the northeast and East Gippsland.

Rainfall

Rainfall was close to normal for most of the State during August 2012. There were some higher than normal totals in the East Gippsland district and a large area of below average in the northwest. The wettest station overall was Beech Forest with 249.2 mm. The wettest single day was the 18th when Haines Junction (Mount Sabine) recorded 73.0 mm. There is a map of rainfall deciles below. No stations appear to have set any new records for rainfall this August.

Temperature

The warmest station on average (maximum and minimum temperatures combined) was Melbourne Regional Office with 11.6 °C, whilst the coolest was Mount Hotham with -3.1 °C.

Maximum temperature

Average maximum temperatures were cooler than normal in parts of the North East and East Gippsland districts. Daytime temperatures in other areas were close to normal for August. The hottest day was the 28th when Mildura Airport recorded 22.8 °C and Mildura Airport recorded the warmest days on average with 17.7 °C. The coldest day was the 31st when Mount Hotham recorded -4.5 °C and Mount Hotham also recorded the coolest days on average with -1.3 °C. There is a map of maximum temperature anomalies below.

Minimum temperature

Average minimum temperatures were cooler than normal in parts of the North East and East Gippsland districts. In most other parts, the average minimum temperature was typical for August. The coldest night was the 2nd when Mount Hotham recorded -7.8 °C and Mount Hotham also recorded the coolest nights on average with -5.0 °C. The warmest nights on average were recorded at Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse with 8.6 °C and the warmest night of the month was the 23rd when Gabo Island Lighthouse and Melbourne Regional Office recorded 13.1 °C. A couple of stations observed their lowest August mean daily minimum temperature on record. There is a map of minimum temperature anomalies below.

Wind

The strongest wind gust was 148 km/h recorded at Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse on the 9th.

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 4 pm on Monday 3 September 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
