Victoria in September 2012: Dry with warm days

September 2012 in Victoria was characterised by:

  • Average to very much below average rainfall
  • Above average maximum temperatures in most places
  • Mostly close to average minimum temperatures.

Rainfall

Preliminary data indicates that much of Victoria was drier than average this September. The wettest station overall with 215.6 mm was Mount Baw Baw. The wettest single day was the 29th when Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse recorded 46.2 mm. Several relatively young stations observed their highest total September rainfall on record and one recorded its highest September daily rainfall. There is a map of rainfall deciles below.

Temperature

The warmest station on average was Mildura Airport with 15.2 °C whilst the coolest on average was Mount Hotham with 0.6 °C.

Maximum temperature

Average maximum temperatures were warmer than is usual for September in most parts of the State. The exceptions were the Wimmera and Central districts where the maximum temperatures were close to average. The hottest day was the 27th when Mildura Airport recorded 36.4 °C and Mildura Airport also recorded the warmest days on average with 22.6 °C. Mount Hotham recorded the coolest days on average with 3.1 °C and the coldest day of the month was the 29th when Mount Hotham recorded -4.2 °C. A couple of stations had their coldest September day (lowest maximum temperature) on record. There is a map of maximum temperature anomalies below.

Minimum temperature

Night-time temperatures were mixed across the State but overall average minimum temperatures were mostly close to normal for September. The coldest night for the month was the 2nd when Mount Hotham recorded -7.2 °C. Mount Hotham also recorded the coolest nights on average with -2.0 °C. Gabo Island Lighthouse recorded the warmest nights on average with 10.0 °C and the warmest night was the 28th when Mount Nowa Nowa recorded 20.9 °C. Echuca Aerodrome had their lowest September temperature on record. Some sites had their warmest September night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record. Cape Nelson Lighthouse had their lowest September mean daily minimum temperature on record. There is a map of minimum temperature anomalies below.

Wind

The strongest wind gust was 154 km/h, recorded at Mount Buller on the 28th.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 1 October 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
