Melbourne in November 2015: warm nights and variable daytime temperatures

Rainfall was average to below average across Melbourne during November. All suburbs across the wider metropolitan area recorded above-average maximum and minimum temperatures.

  • Average to below-average rainfall at all locations
  • Above-average temperatures across Melbourne
  • A wet start to the month
  • Funnel clouds reported over Melbourne Airport and northern suburbs on the 5th
  • Strong and gusty winds on the 25th and 30th

November rainfall was average to below average for all sites across Melbourne. Most of the rain fell in the first part of the month, most notably on the 5th and 6th due to a low pressure system and the associated broad low pressure trough that moved over the city. Melbourne City (Olympic Park) recorded 13 days with rain during November and a monthly total of 43 mm, most of which fell during the 48 hours to 9am on the 6th. With 94.4 mm, Ferny Creek in the Dandenong Ranges was the wettest location during the month in the greater Melbourne area. The highest daily total of 25.0 mm was recorded at Melbourne Airport on the 6th.

For the month as a whole, maximum temperatures were above average across the metropolitan area due to several spells of very warm conditions: on the 8th-9th, 16th-19th and 24th-25th approaching cold fronts directed northerly airflow across the city. At Melbourne City (Olympic Park) the warmest days saw 33.3 °C on both the 17th and 25th, while the highest maximum temperature recorded in the greater Melbourne area was 36.1 °C at Avalon Airport on the 9th. For the month as a whole, minimum temperatures across the metropolitan area were above average. Melbourne City (Olympic Park) recorded 9 consecutive days (between 17th and 25th) with minimum temperatures above 12 °C, while the warmest night during the month (on the 6th) saw 16.6 °C. The lowest minimum temperature during November recorded in the wider metropolitan area was 0.1 °C at Coldstream on the 27th, in a wake of a cold front that brought a sharp decrease in temperatures.

A cold front that swept across the city late on the 25th brought also strong, gusty winds, which uprooted trees and resulted in minor damage to houses. Most sites across the wider Melbourne area recorded wind-gusts in excess of 80 km/h.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Melbourne using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Tuesday 1 December 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
