Melbourne in July 2016: rainfall and temperatures above average
July rainfall was generally above average across the Melbourne metropolitan area with the wettest period occurring on the 6th. Both mean maximum and minimum temperatures were above the long-term July average.
Above average rainfall
- Several cold fronts crossed the city during the month bringing cold and wet conditions
- Rainfall was above average in most of the eastern and northern suburbs, and well above average in the west
- The wettest day was on the 6th, with several suburbs recording daily totals of more than 20 mm
- The wettest location in the greater Melbourne area was Ferny Creek with 145.2 mm
- Melbourne city (Olympic Park) recorded 19 days with rain and a monthly total of 64.2 mm, more than third of which (22.6 mm) was recorded on the 6th
Overnight temperatures well above average
- Mean minimum temperatures around Melbourne were very much above average for this time of year; mean anomalies ranged from +1.3 °C at Viewbank to +2.1 °C at Essendon Airport and Laverton RAAF
- There were several cold and frosty nights due to clear and calm conditions, most notably on the 17th, when minimum temperature at Coldstream dropped to -3.6 °C and Melbourne city (Olympic Park) recorded 3.1 °C
- Most sites around Melbourne recorded a July mean maximum temperature that was slightly above average, with the mean anomalies ranging from +0.2 °C at Viewbank to +1.1 °C at Essendon Airport
Strong winds
- A cold front assiciated with a deep low pressure system which passed to the south of Tasmania crossed Melbourne on the 12th bringing very cold air and strong winds
- Avalon Airport, Laverton RAAF, Viewbank and Moorabbin Airport all recorded wind gusts of 80 km/h or more on the 12th; the strongest wind gust on the same day, 96 km/h, was recorded at St Kilda Harbour

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Melbourne using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Monday 1 August 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
